Due to censorship concerns, Russia is ‘partially restricting’ Facebook access

Retrieved from nypost.com

After Russia’s ministry of communications accused the social network of unlawful censorship, the Russian government proceeded to “partially block” Facebook access in the nation on Friday. When Facebook (FB) reportedly cracked down on many Russian media sources on its platform on Thursday, ministry officials stated the social network had committed violations of human rights and “violated the rights and freedoms of Russian residents,” according to a statement.

As per the report, the list includes the official Facebook profiles of RIA Novosti, Zvezda TV, Lenta.ru, and Gazeta.ru. In regard to the charges, Meta global affairs president Nick Clegg said on Friday that Russia had ordered the company to “cease the independent fact-checking and labeling” of the four Russian news organizations.

Clegg issued a statement saying, “We declined.” “Our apps are being used by ordinary Russians to express themselves and organize for action. We urge them to keep raising their voices, sharing what’s going on, and organizing” Meta’s different platforms are a good place to start.

The Russian action demonstrates how the turmoil in Ukraine has put social media platforms in a vulnerable position, drawing international attention to their abilities to censor content ranging from violent on-the-ground fighting reports to misinformation and propaganda.

According to the Russian announcement, Facebook breached Federal Law №272-FZ, which covers human rights and Russian citizen rights. The statement also alleged that since October 2020, Facebook had banned Russian media approximately two dozen times.

The scope of the bans, as well as their impact on Facebook’s operations in Russia and Facebook’s parent company, Meta, were not immediately evident. In recent months, the Russian government has imposed a slew of fines on US technology companies for allegedly failing to remove illegal content from their platforms. Fines have been issued against Google, Twitter, and Meta.
