Drown Your Words
A Poem
Do you know what amplification is and do you understand that it’s not about amplifying your own words? That you don’t need a bullhorn for a mouthful of whiteness right now when you can share the sentiment of someone who knows how it feels to be persecuted and then prosecuted for being alive on a Saturday night
Drown your words because they are not adding to the conversation right now They are just drawing more attention to your ignorance and will for a spotlight when the darkness is pervasive because all the lights are off, in protest, except for you, who has screen-glare on your face because you have to Tweet more of your white support, in your own words, which is the problem
We, this includes me because I am white, don’t have the words to address this because we don’t have the history to undress it and there we sit anyway, on pontification island, a large soapbox in front of an Internet microphone and we yell into it that we are supportive or we post pictures of our donations or of us at a protest or in protest But maybe, just maybe, we should step back and offer support differently
Drown your words, open your arms Open your ears and when I say open your ears that doesn’t mean writing #listening because if you are typing #hashtags to amplify your sentiment, you are hoping for some form of acknowledgment So how could anyone ever know if it was real? And also how can you be listening if you are typing #listening as a way to feel justified or woke or progressive?
So the next time you have something to say please reach deep inside of you and grab those words with both hands, then run a bath, a warm one, and hold those words under the water until they drown until you can really hear until you can listen
