Dream of a Queen

Poetry — from earth to sky and back

the crinkles above my brow disappeared tears fell away I came into my own upon this autumn day

nature blew leftover leaves that settled in my hair I wore them like a crown then tossed them in the air

I imagined I was queen that ordered all that flew to land upon the grass and circle ‘round my shoes

birds of the air pressed comfort into my soul they flapped their wings in merrymaking a gift of love made whole

they chattered, chirping in constant celebration of the new queen that brought much thrilling elation

I blessed them with waving arms and a branch for a wand they sent melodies up to the sky cementing our formidable bond

the scene of feathered friends remained always and true they came often in my dreams keeping me young and new

I remembered the day that I became queen on a crisp autumn day with leaves lying in my hair where the birds of the air became my friends and subjects the green grass my kingdom’s chair

I awoke from my dreams with feathered wings upon my back I flew away to visit my friends from earth to sky was my track

I stayed with them a while upon lush green velvety trees reminiscing about my own rich grass so back to earth I flew from nature’s queen to lass were we

I still felt queenlike though humble was my way when I arrived home I found new friends who came to my green grass to play

nature’s friends never left my side they celebrated each day with song filling all the trees outside my home their music spreading wide and long

I came to be a queen one day and then became a lass but I ruled my world still, the birds’ friendship for real did last

I didn’t have to fly away to visit their homes away from home new friends came every day a queen, a lass with a crown, never alone.
