How dreams unleash your creative flow

Art in progress and Photo by Author

Current events have influenced almost everyone’s habits and daily routine, no matter where we live on the planet. Many of my friends and associates have had changes in their sleep patterns. They also find themselves having vivid and strange dreams, different than the previous type of dreams they’ve experienced in the past.

My dreams have lots of water in them. Rainy city streets, rolling ocean waves, waterfalls, rivers, even mud puddles flow through those dreams regularly. An uneasy feeling seeps into them many nights. This is understandable, but I found it was coloring the way I was feeling during the day. I knew I wasn’t alone.

That wet effect Photo by Author

A few months ago, a group of artist friends was commiserating about our collective mood. Many felt isolated and all felt the stress of uncertainty. We decided to create a piece of art for a random member of the group and exchange it when complete. The theme was a Corona Talisman For Protection.

Talisman Ring and Hand Photo by Author

We all had our mission. There were no restrictions. It could be a painting, an art doll, a collage, a book, anything you chose. That was the rub for me. If I started one project, I started another, then another. Nothing felt right and time was marching on. Before I fell asleep one night that is what was on my mind. During the night I dreamed of water once again, but this water was pouring from terracotta pots and I could hear a woman chanting, “wash your hands, wash your hands,” over and over. Upon awakening, I had my epiphany. I even knew what colors I wanted to use and how to get that “wet’’ effect.

Terracotta clay, check.

Wooden hand with a heart silhouette, check.

Papers and assorted goodies for collage, check.

Clear resin for the dripping water effect, check.

Lots of paints and brushes, check.

I gathered everything and set things up in my studio. My idea was to create a two-sided hand with a central open heart, resting on our embattled planet. One side represents healing, the other represents the devastation caused by this virus. There will be balance eventually.

Talisman Ring~Photo by Author

The ring is something to hold when you feel isolated or frightened. A lovely person told the story of being traumatized as a child. She could not even bear to be hugged, but she was able to hold on pinky to pinky and walk with her friend. When you hold the ring with your pinky, imagine mine is holding yours. No words needed. I’m there for you. The inscription reads This Is Art for my art sister.

To my delight and great relief, eventually, everything came together and the talisman was complete.

Dream Fact:

Dreams can be powerful in everyday problem-solving. By posing my question before I fell asleep, I allowed my conscious mind to rest and let my dream consciousness take over for a while. This can work for you, too. If you ask that question as you are drifting into sleep you may find a surprising and practical answer upon awakening. It takes a little practice, but it works like a charm.
