Drawing Water With a Bucket From a Well

March Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Retro or Old”

Enjoyed drawing water from the well

In New Delhi, the city where I live we do not have wells any longer. We also do not draw water with steel or aluminium buckets.

City people do not have the stamina to pick up heavy buckets or draw out the water from a well, as it is quite a difficult task.

Moreover, we are used to taps from where we get water.

However, I saw many wells in Amritsar. Although it is now a big city, things are old-fashioned and retro.

The people speak the Punjabi language quite different to what we speak in Delhi. Even though the language is the same, the mannerisms are different.

Amritsar has expanded into a new fashionable city and one part of it is still retro or old. The same thing applies to the clothes that they wear, and the style of food that they eat.

I saw plenty of homes where an airplane in beautiful colors was made on the rooftops on top of the water tank. It signifies prosperity that their children have left the city for better prospects in life.

These were interesting facets of the life in Amritsar. It was enjoyable to see the city running with Mercedez cars as well as rickshaws.

We went to a tourist complex and there we saw a well where men were being helped by the women. The men drew out the water and the women carried it home or vic versa. It was a sight to behold.

I liked the comradeship between the men and women.

When they left the well. I wanted to try it out too. I put the rope in and the pulley was pulling me along with it. So I dropped some water to attain balance. People were having fun and cheered me. “Come on, come on” they said.

The pulley tries to pull you in and you have to pull back. Only then the water will draw out. It is a lot of fun, provided you do not have to do it every day, and you know how to balance.

Memories flooded back when I fell in the well as my cousin loosened the hold and I slipped in when we were kids.

I found the experience full of fun. Do try to draw water from a well if you get a chance.
