DRAWING CHALLENGE/BIRDS

Drawing Instead of Writing?

Winging to the heart of the matter

drawing by Thalia

I’ve put my pencil to the sketchpad and have picked up the challenge posted on Weeds and Wildflower.

I was excited when I first read it! This sounds fun! I love birds!

Then I began to perfect my skill, not at drawing, but at procrastination. Almost a whole month to think about and not do anything. Something I am quite good at.

But I finally pulled out my sketchpad to start doodling.

Interesting side note; in the midst of moving across country, one of my ‘important to be unpacked first boxes’ contains sketchpads, journals and photos. Alas, no colored pencils or pens!

I began sketching with a comical approach but quickly realized this challenge offers an important reminder to appreciate birds, to be in awe of their beauty as well as their importance and impact on the environment.

Our bird population has declined drastically in the past five decades due to overuse of pesticides, climate change and habitat loss due to ongoing new constructions.

This impacts all of us, whether we live in the city, suburbs, near the waterways or on the prairies. Birds are crucial for our environment.

When I lived in New Jersey, I had a gorgeous cedar tree in my backyard. I didn’t plant the tree. A bird dropped a seed years ago onto a bare patch of dirt. When the seed budded and began to grow, I was curious enough to see what would evolve.

Today the tree is over 9 feet tall and hosts either a cardinal or robin family each spring.

Every time I looked at the tree, I would marvel how this tree was an unexpected gift from a bird doing his daily activities.

Just as writing pulls an author into different directions, participating in this art challenge has reminded me of the importance of doing our part; however small it is, to preserve our bird population.

I’m going out to refill the bird-feeder now. What about you?

How can you expect birds to sing when their groves are cut down?

Henry David Thoreau ‘Walden’

Thanks go to Dennett of Weeds and Wildflower for this challenge to draw a bird and to stretch another part of our creativity
