Downsize These Things To Enjoy More Time, Happiness, & Wealth

Simplifying life

Finding more time, happiness, and wealth does not require deprivation. It may take a little bit of sacrifice but it’s mostly in the best interest of your goals of having more time for the people and things you love.

By embracing minimalism and a life of intentionality and gratitude, I’ve discovered more peace and financial stability. By simplifying life, I’ve uncovered more time freedom and breathing room.

Here are some things to downsize, not deprive yourself of, in order to enjoy more time, happiness, and wealth…

Activities Calendar

Delete some events from your calendar. Yes, simply delete them. Not everything is mandatory or appealing. Of course, let people know if your absence will affect anything; use common courtesy. Say no to new commitments. Say no to things you aren’t excited about. Reduce your busyness without deprivation. Only keep what brings you joy.

House

Downsize the number of things in your home. Declutter the stuff that takes up your time but fails to bring you joy. Things that require a lot of maintenance, thought, tidying, and space are not always worth having. Take back your time by getting rid of some of the items that bring more frustration than happiness. The ultimate downsize would be to downsize your actual living space. If you have too much space, think about downsizing. Save some money from rent or mortgage and maintenance. Save some time keeping the excess space clean.

Social Circle

This is a tough one but not everyone in your social circle is meant to be with you for more than a chapter in your life. If someone is negatively affecting your mental health, unnecessarily costing you a lot of money and stress, doesn’t have your best interests in mind, think about putting some space between yourself and that person. Downsize your social circle by spending less time with toxic personalities. If the person is family or someone too close to pull away from, have a serious conversation with them or take as much space as you can.

Shopping Lists

Literally downsize your shopping lists — grocery lists, holiday shopping lists, new clothes list, and miscellaneous lists. Shop your pantry and closet and drawers before buying new stuff. Not every single person in your life needs a gift all of the time. See what you can do to reduce the list or at least reduce the budget. Are some foods going to waste? Maybe take a break from those snacks or drinks for awhile.

Work Hours

Look for opportunities to reduce your work hours if work is causing too much stress. Work from home if possible to save commute and work preparation hours. Use more of your vacation time. Talk to your boss about temporarily or permanently switching to a 32-hour schedule. If budget permits, look for a part-time or per diem job.

Of course these are all simply suggestions to try if you are looking for more time, happiness, or wealth. You only have 24 hours per day, so how about spending them mindfully, doing the things you want to do, and with people you care about and who care about you?
