Sometimes, I take a morbid pleasure in going against mainstream trends, just because.

Instead of putting on our serious suits and nodding sagely about gender equality and women’s awesomeness, let’s try a special menu: a delightful chaos of facts and figures about the awe-inspiring beings we call women! Watch out! My mischievous side emerges! 😇

I hope you’ll laugh, raise an eyebrow, and maybe even give a spontaneous round of applause (but not before reading the entire article).

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you my curated collection of fascinating tidbits about these fabulous creatures known as women!

  • The nearer a mother lives to the equator, the more likely she is to give birth to a baby girl as opposed to a baby boy (this claim is not universally supported by scientific evidence though).
  • Women speak about 20,000 words a day, while men speak about 7,000 words a day (research indicates a general consensus here).
  • The average amount of time a woman can keep a secret is 47 hours and 15 minutes. This one is intriguing. There isn’t precise scientific data on this specific duration, but it highlights the stereotype that women are better at maintaining confidentiality. (I wouldn’t bet on it, haha).
  • Women spend nearly one year of their lives deciding what to wear. This idea resonates with many. (I’m putting all my chips on this one).
  • Some women are born with two uteruses, a rare condition called uterus didelphys. Sometimes women with this condition also have two vaginas. This one is not funny at all, but I hope those women make the most of it.
  • Because of the high production of estrogen during puberty, girls’ brains generally mature two years earlier than boys. This one has some scientific basis. Estrogen influences brain development, and girls often exhibit cognitive advancements during adolescence. However, individual variations exist, and other factors also contribute.
  • The majority of countries and regions in the world have more females than males. But the top two most populous countries, China and India, have a higher male population by a margin. Therefore there are more males than females in the world. If the population of China and India is excluded, there are more females than males in the rest of the world. Who runs the world? Well, apparently everyone else, except for China and India!

Now, a slight detour:

  • A study from the University of Virginia (2011) found that women are 47% more likely than men to suffer severe injuries in car crashes. This disparity arises because car safety features have historically been designed with men in mind. I hope that by now, after more than 10 years, they have fixed this terrible error.
  • Globally, 12 million girls get married before the age of 18 each year. That’s roughly 33,000 child brides every day, or one every two seconds. This often occurs because marrying girls off at a young age transfers the economic burden to another family. This is sad.
  • Women are more likely to be appointed to leadership positions during times of crisis or when organizations are struggling. It highlights the challenges women face in leadership roles but also their resilience and ability to navigate difficult situations (The Glass Cliff Phenomenon). It seems that women have got a special superpower for turning chaos into success.

Happy International Women’s Day to all the fabulous ladies out there, and to the awesome men who support and celebrate them! 🎉🌟
