Summary

Dennett, a photographer, shares a week's worth of contrasting photo pairs from a personal photo-a-day challenge, reflecting the changing environment and inviting others to join in the creative endeavor.

Abstract

In a personal project, Dennett captures the transformation of the landscape over a week through pairs of contrasting photographs taken each morning. The stark differences in the same scene, such as a foggy then sunny lake, inspire Dennett to vary the challenge by taking two contrasting photos each day. The images range from material to spiritual, unexpected to expected, and showcase themes of departure and arrival, as well as continuity and change. Dennett encourages fellow photographers and readers to participate in this non-competitive challenge, emphasizing the meditative aspect of photography and the importance of capturing the essence of one's daily experiences and emotions through imagery.

Opinions

  • Dennett views the dramatic change in morning scenes as a sign to introduce variation into the photo-a-day challenge.
  • The photographer believes in the power of photography as a form of meditation and a means to capture the unnoticed aspects of life.
  • Dennett extends an open invitation to others to join the challenge, emphasizing that it's about personal expression and representation of one's day, not about taking the perfect photo.
  • There is an appreciation for the contrasts found in daily life, as evidenced by the thematic pairs of photos.
  • The challenge is presented as flexible, with no strict posting frequency, encouraging participants to share their world at their own pace.

Photo-a-Day Challenge

Double Shots

Changing it up

On Monday, I took the two shots above one hour apart and was amazed at the difference in the appearance of the lake behind our home. At 8:05 a.m. the air was wet, foggy, and gray. At 9:05 a.m. the fog was mostly gone and the sun was shining. We went from very cool to warm in 60 minutes.

I took that as a sign that I should change things up this week — a little variation on my photo-a-day challenge. Rather than one photo, I chose two for each day and concentrated on shots that were contrasting in one fashion or another. Each pair of photos in this piece were shot during the same morning.

I welcome the other participants in this challenge to do the same if so inclined:

Erika Burkhalter, Eileen Vorbach Collins, Anne Bonfert, Tracy Aston, Rachael Ann Sand, Sasha Meyer, June Nguyen, Lisa Bolin, Denise G Juan O. Aguilera, David Wade Chambers

And, I invite you to join the challenge. It’s not a contest, has nothing to do with your best photo and everything to do with the photo that best represents your day/walk/feelings — one-photo-a-day, except in this special contrasting challenge.

I encourage you to use your camera as a meditation tool. Take photos outdoors or indoors. Look for the unusual, the unnoticed, the contrasting. Then, introduce us to your world through those pictures.

I post weekly, some post less often. Doesn’t really matter. Come and go as you please. We’ll be here waiting.
