Dopamine Detox Protocol

Feeling burnt out, low energy, an inability to concentrate? Regain your focus and joy for life by removing modern day addictions like social media from your life (at least temporarily) and reestablish a healthy balance of dopamine in your brain.
Dopamine detox, also known as a digital detox, is a popular trend that is gaining popularity in the wellness industry. The aim of a dopamine detox is to reset the brain’s dopamine receptors by avoiding dopamine-inducing activities, such as social media, gaming, and junk food. The concept behind a dopamine detox is simple: when we indulge in dopamine-inducing activities, our brains become desensitized to the dopamine we produce naturally. As a result, we need more and more stimulation to feel the same level of pleasure, leading to addiction and dependence on dopamine-inducing activities.
If you’ve been feeling a progressive disinterest in life and things that once made you happy, a dopamine detox can be a way to re-hardwire your brain to regain your energy and zest for life.
In this post, we will discuss how to the benefits of dopamine detoxes, how to build your own Dopamine Detox protocol, and tips and tricks to make the process easier.
Benefits of A Dopamine Detox:
1. Increased productivity
This one is obvious, but the less time we spend on dopamine-inducing activities like social media and Netflix binging, the more time we will have to focus on work or other productive tasks. This increased productivity can lead to better work-life balance and a more fulfilling life.
The average social media user spends over two and a half hours on social media every day! That means if viewing social media was a 9–5 job, you would spend 110 days a year working full time without any breaks. That is a tremendous amount of time you can get back from cutting back on mindless scrolling. What new skill could you learn in 110 days of working 8 hours a day? How would your relationships improve if you dedicated 110 days to spending time with your friends and loved ones?
2. Improved mental health
A dopamine detox can help improve your mental health by reducing anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders. It can also help improve sleep quality, which is essential for good mental health.
The statistics for social media alone are alarming. According the Digital Wellbeing Survey,
85% of respondents indicated that social media negatively affects the way they feel about their own body.
89% of respondents indicated that social media negatively affects their mental health.
86% of respondents indicated that social media use makes them feel anxious.
Despite the clear negative health effects, social media is something many of us continue to engage in. What would happen to our mental health if we removed the compulsion to look at our phones every few minutes? How would our mind and bodies feel if we cut back on junk food and ate a clean diet for even just a few days?
3. Better self-control
Engaging in a dopamine detox can help improve self-control by reducing cravings for dopamine-inducing activities. It can also help build internal mechanisms for impulse control. Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness at Piedmont,
“Processed foods are mainly salt, sugar, fat and preservatives — all of which create a combination of different sensations in your mouth. Your brain is involved as well. Foods that rapidly vanish or ‘melt in your mouth’ signal to your brain that you’re not eating as much as you actually are. In other words, these foods literally tell your brain that you’re not full and you need more of the food. It sounds so good, but actually, you are not fueling your body, but burdening it to work very hard to metabolize junk food.”
Whether its junk food, social media, or video games, companies design their products to elicit the greatest response of dopamine in our brains. This keeps us coming back for more and more. Don’t get sucked into the trap they are setting. Or soon enough, you will wonder why even the most basic of tasks require so much energy and effort. Engaging in a dopamine detox can help us regain our self control and willpower.
How to Do a Dopamine Detox:
Okay, you’ve learned about some of the benefits and you’re sold! But what does a Dopamine Detox actually entail? It’s going to be a little different for everyone, depending on your vices and current state of mind. So let’s dive right in..
Step 1- Identify dopamine-inducing activities
The first step in dopamine detox is to identify the activities that trigger the release of dopamine in your brain. These may include social media, streaming services, video games, porn, junk food, or even caffeine. Take stock of your daily routines and behaviors. Make a list of the various ways you are flooding your brain with dopamine on a regular basis.
Step 2- Create a detox plan
Once you have identified your dopamine-inducing activities, it’s time to create a detox plan. The plan should outline how long you will detox for and what activities you will avoid during this time.
Start small: If you’re new to dopamine detoxes, start small. Try avoiding dopamine-inducing activities for a few hours a day to start, then gradually increase the duration. Eliminating all dopamine-inducing activities for one week is a good goal to work your way up to. If you are noticing positive changes to your focus and motivation, you can continue to work your way up from there.
Step 3- Prepare
If you’re a seasoned pro at dopamine fasting, you are probably ready to hit the ground running. However, for newbies, it can be helpful to put some tools in place to aid you in your dopamine detox.
Out of sight out of mind: One of the best dopamine detox tips I’ve found is to purchase a small lock box with a timer. Simply go to Amazon and search for “phone lock box with timer.” You’ll get a ton of option to choose from. These boxes will keep your phone, TV remote, snacks, etc. out of reach until you are ready to use them again. This is a great hack for first time dopamine detoxers who have not yet built up the will power to resist on their own.

Get an accountability partner: sometimes it can be helpful to do your first dopamine detox with a friend. That way you can share what is and isn’t working for you and stay accountable if you fail. You can even create a fun incentive, like if you play video games during the next 24 hours you have to wash their car. Or, if you eat fast food this week, you need to go to the gym for 5 hours on Saturday. Keep it fun and meaningful enough to keep yourself from slipping.
Communicate: if you are going to be locking your phone away for several hours each day, make sure you give your friends and loved ones a heads up! Explain you are not ignoring them, but engaging in your first dopamine detox. Hopefully they will do their best to support you in this new goal.
Step 4- Dopamine Detox
You’ve done everything needed to plan and prepare. The only thing left to do, is the detox itself. Be sure to monitor your mood and energy levels throughout the course of your dopamine detox. You might feel worse for a bit as your body craves the easy access to dopamine. “You might feel some withdrawal symptoms like depression, lack of motivation, anxiety, or headaches.” However, over time your body will start to reset back to normal and you will start to see positive shifts to your mindset and motivation.
Tips to Make Your Dopamine Detox Easier:
Set realistic goals: Set realistic goals for your dopamine detox. If you’re used to spending hours on social media, it may not be realistic to go cold turkey for 1 month. Start small and build your way up to ensure success.
Stay busy: One of the challenges of dopamine detox is finding things to do when you’re not indulging in dopamine-inducing activities. Stay busy by pursuing hobbies, spending time with friends or family, or exercising.
Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness can help reduce cravings and increase self-awareness. Practice mindfulness meditation or yoga to help stay focused and calm during your detox.
Remove triggers: Remove triggers that may lead to dopamine-inducing activities. For example, if you’re addicted to social media, delete the apps from your phone or log out of your accounts. Do you always get an Egg McMuffin on your way home from the gym? Maybe take another route, and prepare a healthy breakfast so its waiting when you get home.
Reward yourself: Reward yourself for sticking to your detox plan. Celebrate small victories, such as completing a day or week without indulging in dopamine-inducing activities.
Conclusion:
Dopamine detox is a simple but effective way to reset your brain’s dopamine receptors and improve your mental health, self-control, and productivity. The key to a successful dopamine detox is to identify dopamine-inducing activities, create a detox plan, start small, and get support from friends or family. By following these tips and strategies you will hopefully start to regain a sense of control.
