Don’t You Think You’re Going A Little Overboard?

How to exaggerate your way through life.

I’m reading “Learning to Swim” by KJ. This is my third KJ book, so I’m starting to notice a pattern.

She likes to give one of her characters in each story a particular sense of humor. One where they exaggerate events to the point of ridiculousness.

Maybe a character is worried she’ll make a bad impression on a woman she likes, so she tells her friends,

“I won’t just make a bad impression, I’ll trip in front of her and hit my head on the table and they’ll have to take me to the ER where I’ll confess my undying love for her but use the wrong name because I’m still recovering and she’ll never talk to me again!”

Personally, I don’t find that sort of humor funny…but I do find it useful.

It’s a great way to stop worrying about the future.

How to Stop Worrying About the Future

Let’s say you’ve got a Zoom meeting coming up and you’ve been asked to speak. You’re feeling extremely nervous.

When you think about that nervousness, several thoughts come up.

You think, “I’m gonna totally blow it! I’ll forget my words and no one will understand what I’m trying to convey.”

Take those thoughts…toss them in your Vitamix blender, and turn the speed up to 10.

You’re not just going to forget your words, you’re gonna forget to change out of your holey pajamas that morning. AND the CEO will happen to choose that conference call to check in on how things are going with the company. You’ll be promptly removed from your post and relegated to the basement where you’ll sort through incoming mail for the next 20 years, only to be fired days before retirement.

Can you see how ridiculous that sounds?

Can you see that your original version is just as ridiculous?

Now, instead of feeling anxious, you can go prepare properly, and maybe you won’t blow it after all.

Think you’re worrying a bit too much? Going overboard?

Great!

Exaggerate a little more, and you’ll get through it just fine.
