What’s Your Superpower?

Don’t Second Guess Your Superpower Embrace It

Have you ever shrugged off a compliment from someone? What seems easy for you is your superpower to someone else. Maybe you’re organized and can find things easily, or you can manage multiple projects efficiently.

It’s not by chance, you’ve been doing it for so long and learning from your mistakes along the way. Others don’t see the mistakes; they see the result. So don’t minimize it, embrace it!

Don’t Judge

Four years ago, I went to a psychic and had a tarot card reading. You may think this is witchcraft or whatever. You do you. I believe in God as my higher power, believe in spirituality and the Law of Attraction. There are no coincidences, only God-incidences.

If you’ve never had a reading, it’s something like this. She asked me to choose several cards, maybe five. She turned each over and explained the meaning of them all. (You try to remember everything, but you can’t unless you have someone take notes or record it for you.)

After the reading, I could ask three questions. I asked about money. Our financial picture wasn’t so bright, although she revealed money wasn’t an issue for me.

Our immediate situation wasn’t saying the same thing, so it was nice entertainment. I’m not going to tell you that everything she said came true and it's all rainbows and butterflies. Some could argue that I made things happen based on her reading.

What does that have to do with a superpower you ask?

I’m going to tell you.

What’s Your Superpower, how to recognize it.

This was the beginning of an unofficial five-year plan. Not only did I get a better-paying job, but my husband’s situation also improved as well. Hope can be your superpower; it is for me. Hope sets things in motion and eventually led us on our debt-free journey.

It’s easy to start a project, the follow-through is the difficult part. How many half-read books or home projects do you have lying around? You have to decide what’s important to keep your focus.

Your Superpower is your outlook on life

A friend commented that I work full time, we’re remodeling the house and I manage to write on top of having a chronic illness.

This could look like a superwoman, but actually, I started each at different times. If all of this happened at once I’d be overwhelmed. Ten years ago I learned of my chronic illness, I’ve been at my current job for three years and have been writing for over a year. The house was a short-term project which is complete now. What looks like a superpower to another is just another day in the life. Now I wonder what to do with that extra time? But I digress.

Accept it and use it to your advantage

A superpower doesn’t materialize overnight, you develop it over time. Be persistent, consistent, and methodical. When you make it a routine, you don’t have to think about the next step, it just comes. I’m organized at work because I have to be.

When someone comes into my office for a work order, I have a system to find it quickly. You don’t want to waste someone else’s time while you’re trying to find something. You take a system and customize it to work for you.

That’s the real superpower. It has to work for you effortlessly and easily. And you have to maintain it like a good filing system. Update your files and keep them at the forefront.

Here’s an interesting story about my rolling file cart. I bought it on Amazon and assembled it myself. Ok, I followed the directions, but something wasn’t quite right, but it worked.

Later a coworker walked in and looked at it. “Those are upside down.” He started to dismantle my cart. We put it together the correct way in a matter of minutes.

His superpower? He could look at something new and determine what was wrong and correct it. And, my cart doesn’t wobble anymore, win-win.

And I’ll confess that my home office isn’t as organized as my day job, but it’s a work in progress. You have to follow your priorities.

The Takeaway

So what’s your superpower? Maybe something you think is easy and no big deal is amazing to someone else. Don’t second guess your superpower, embrace It. Use your strength to help others when you can in small ways.

Share your superpower, but don’t force it on others. Don’t go into an hour-long lecture about office organization, when all someone wants is one work order. If they ask, then you can tell them.

Offer encouragement, or help them fix something and make it better. Just be a friend and be kind. You may see a situation in a different way and resolve it together.
