Let's share a moment - Spend 30 seconds with my story.

Your authentic engagement is a treasure to me.

If it doesn't touch your heart, feel free to pass on the applause (Clapping).

It's the genuine connections and the spirit of true readership that I hold dear.

As you walk, do you tend to look upwards or downwards? By the end of this story, I would like to share the below 2 key points.

  • Why do people look down or look up?
  • Why should we choose to look up and “Don’t Look Down” in our life?

I’m confident you’ll find something valuable to learn and apply — as you always can from my stories. So, let’s go!

Is there anyone who enjoyed the movie named Don’t Look Up?” by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence? In the movie, two scientists discovered that a comet was heading toward Earth and that humanity was in danger. They tried their best to share it with everyone but no one bothered to listen to them.

Despite the efforts of the scientists to warn the world about the impending disaster, their warnings are largely ignored due to political and media distractions saying “Don’t Look Up!”.

The comet eventually hits Earth, leading to catastrophic consequences and the end of most life on the planet. The movie ends with a sharp observation about how society fails to respond to and deal with huge & immediate dangers.

You can catch up on the trailer below and it’s on Netflix as well! Quite a good movie for a weekend I would say.

Although the consequence of “Not looking up” is not as fatal as the human race’s extinction just like in the movie, it has a substantial impact on your life.

1. Reasons People Choose to Look Down or Up

I am not judging any jobs in our society here. All jobs are valued in our society and each unique role plays an important part in our society. But as I go to the food court or restaurants, I can’t help to notice one pattern.

  • People who serve the food and clear dishes tend to look downwards.
  • People who have very high net worth tend to look upwards, emitting a confident aura.

Have you ever seen a CEO who looks not so confident in front of the public and looks downwards? So far I have never seen anyone like that. From the confidence they are emitting, they all look like they have already won something or going to win big — I don’t know what to call it but somehow it feels as if they have a certain “Aura” of confidence.

I believe your point of view, whether you are looking up or down, portrays your level of confidence. It’s not how people perceive you. It’s how you perceive yourself and your self-esteem is reflected on whether you are looking up or down.

Which Came First, the Chicken or the Egg?

Are they looking upwards because they are successful, rich, and confident? Or, did they become famous and rich as they looked upward?

For me, I feel that you have to look confident first by standing straight and looking above, then you will become successful like them.

The same analogy can be applied to Medium writing. If you write with confidence and write well, then you will get followers. Having more followers first doesn’t make the person a great writer.

2. Why Should Choose to Look Up?

Whether it’s a school or workplace, individuals who appear vulnerable and weak often become targets for narcissists. This predation is not just a matter of physical weakness but also extends to perceived mental or emotional vulnerability.

When you look down or adopt a posture that suggests submissiveness, it sends a subconscious signal of vulnerability, making you an attractive target for narcissists seeking to assert their dominance or boost their own confidence by preying on others.

Conversely, adopting a posture of standing straight and maintaining eye contact can significantly alter how you are perceived. By simply looking up and carrying yourself with confidence, you make it considerably more challenging for narcissists to identify you as an easy target.

This principle applies not only in daily interactions but also in critical life moments, such as job interviews.

Picture this:

Consider the impression you make at the interview. Would an employer be more inclined to hire someone who projects confidence by maintaining eye contact and standing tall, or someone who appears overly shy and lacks confidence by consistently looking down?

It’s important to understand that confidence comes from within; you build it yourself, not from what others give you.

“You are the only one who needs to believe in your own confidence.”

By adopting this way of thinking and choosing to hold your head high in every sense, you can change the way others see and treat you. This shift can make a big difference in how you interact with people, whether at work or in your personal life.

Disclaimer:

I am not suggesting you not to look down at all. Please look out for manholes or slippery floors to prevent yourself from getting injured.

Wrapping It Up

To wrap it up, standing up straight and looking up can really change how confident you feel and how others see you. We learned that holding your head high is a big deal — It is not just for looking good, but for feeling strong inside too.

We talked about different situations, from a movie where people didn’t pay attention to warnings, to noticing how different people act in places like food courts. All these stories tell us one thing: acting confident can keep away those who might try to push you down and can also help you do better in important moments, like job interviews.

So, remember, being confident starts with you deciding to look up and face the world with your shoulders back. This small change can make a big difference in your life, helping you feel better about yourself and how you connect with others.
