Don’t Look for Motivation- Focus on Your Why
Motivation will get you going but your why has staying power.
Everyone knows that to be successful, you need to be motivated.
- Motivated for money
- Motivated for fame
- Motivated for weight loss
Whatever your thing is, you won’t get there without motivation, right?
The truth of the matter is motivation will only get you so far.
What will keep you focused and working towards your goals is not motivation itself, but what exists just one step below it: your why.
Understanding the underlying motivations that drive your actions is akin to unlocking a powerful secret — the key to sustained achievement and fulfillment.
Sustained is the keyword here.
We have all experienced that flood of motivation that lasted for days or weeks, only to fizzle out and never return again.
Knowing your why is a fundamental aspect of personal and professional development that can significantly impact your mental stamina and chances of success.
At its core, knowing your why involves identifying the deep-rooted reasons behind your goals and aspirations. It’s not just about what you want to achieve but understanding why it matters to you.
This introspection serves as a powerful source of motivation, providing a robust foundation during times of challenge and uncertainty.
Example: You want to lose weight.
Thinking about looking good on your beach vacation is a motivating factor. But looking deeper, your why is: that you want to look better so you can feel better about yourself, and have more energy and confidence.
One of the primary benefits of knowing your why is the ability to maintain focus and resilience in the face of obstacles. When things start getting sketchy, a clear understanding of why you embarked on this feat in the first place can serve as a guiding light and keep you in the trenches.
Motivation slips easily. It can be as simple as:
- I don’t feel like it today
- I can take a day off
- I will start again tomorrow
But your why reminds you of the long game. This intrinsic motivation acts as a fuel that propels you forward, even when external factors threaten to derail your progress.
Purpose, passion, and meaning
Knowing your why instills a sense of purpose and passion into your pursuits. When you are aligned with your core values and personal mission, the work you do becomes more than just a means to an end; it transforms the process into a meaningful journey.
Remember, it’s not just reaching the finish line that is the prize, it is who we become along the way.
True passion for something in this way not only enhances the quality of our output but also attracts like-minded people who share similar values. This fosters a positive and collaborative environment where you can thrive.
Resilience and better decision making
The power of knowing your why extends beyond personal endeavors and influences team dynamics and organizational cultures as well. Leaders who can articulate and instill a compelling purpose within their teams cultivate a sense of unity and shared vision.
These become the winning teams and well-known brands.
This collective motivation not only enhances productivity but also creates a resilient and adaptive organizational culture that can weather challenges and adapt to change.
In addition, knowing your why facilitates better decision-making. When we’re faced with choices or dilemmas, having a clear understanding of our core motivations allows us to align our decisions with our values and long-term goals.
This clarity reduces the likelihood of making impulsive or conflicting choices that may hinder your progress.
From the example above: “I am not going to eat these cookies because I know I will feel better if I don’t.”
State your why and stick with it
Understanding your underlying motivations not only sustains your momentum but also transforms your journey into a deeply meaningful and rewarding experience.
Each time you set goals, go an extra step further: write down WHY you want each one. Then continue to ask yourself this same question over and over again, until you get down to the root of the reason.
Your real why will unveil itself, and this becomes your real motivating factor.
This will get you far past waning motivation.
No matter what you are trying to accomplish, your why is the compass that keeps you headed in the right direction and can be a driving force to making lasting changes for a better life.
