Don’t Let Your Fear Prevent You From Stepping Into the Unknown
And living the life you desire
A few weeks back, I walked away from my stable job.
It wasn’t a hard choice. I was mentally checked out. It just wasn’t the place for me.
Things changed for the better.
Each day, I felt more and more alive.
I’ve now stepped into the unknown.
So many questions
Here in the unknown, there are so many questions.
Will I be able to make a living as a writer?
Will I run out of ideas?
Will people even care about what I have to say?
These are just a few of the questions that run through my head.
It’s challenging. You have to sit with these questions, but not let them scare you too much. If you let them create intense fear, you won’t be able to take action.
There are points of positive reinforcement on the journey. Milestones, appreciative comments, support from readers, and more. It means a lot.
I’ve started to track my writing’s performance over time.
I wake up, get on Medium, and see what happened overnight.
At the beginning, nothing is changing. Your numbers are small.
Then, you start to gain some momentum. People will start to read your work and you’ll earn some money.
The hardest part for me has been getting accustomed to the progress that I’m making.
This is a hypothetical, but let’s say I’m earning $10 each day over the past couple of weeks. When I wake up one day and see that I only earned $2 that day, I am a bit disappointed.
It’s natural to feel disappointed when things aren’t going our way.
But I’ve found that I can get over this disappointment by writing.
I refuse to let poor results dictate my actions.
The hardest part of the journey
You need to have a deep sense of faith.
This is intensely difficult at the beginning.
Nobody is reading your work. So, all the evidence is pointing against you.
You need to have faith that you are putting good content out there. You need to believe that eventually, people will appreciate your perspective.
Most people give up at this stage. Initially, they might believe that they can accomplish their goals. But after weeks, months, or years, that belief starts to fade.
The challenge lies in being able to do work without getting significant results.
How long could you write consistently if nobody read your work and you weren’t earning money?
If you start to improve your skills as a writer, it might not be that long. But you can’t predict how long this period will last.
And you also don’t have much control over it.
It’s tough to push yourself even when things aren’t going your way.
That’s what’s required though.
Nobody experiences tremendous success right at the start.
Sure, some experience it more quickly than others.
But it takes time.
Learn to separate the results from your actions.
And keep working hard.
If you give up, your failure is guaranteed.
