Summer Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Shine!”

I’m hot and I mean it!

Basking in its glory of being one of the 10 most spicy peppers of the world, the Ghost pepper or Bhut jolokia (in Assamese, ‘Bhut’ means ‘ghost’ and ‘jolokia’ means ‘pepper’) is a 150 times hotter than a jalapeno.

This red elongated wrinkled-skinned beauty engrossed my attention while taking a stroll in the Sunday morning market of a suburb in Assam a few summers back.

The hottest pepper in India, ghost pepper, is mainly cultivated in the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, and Manipur. People love to eat it in combination with dried or fermented fish and pork, as its intense flavor has garnered a lot of attention over the past few years. It holds a vital part of Naga and Assamese cuisines.

One interesting fact about this hot pepper is that the villagers use it to keep animals at bay from their homes and property by applying it on their walls, fences, etc.

Now some fact check — — the ghost pepper has a normal range of 855,000 to 1,041,427 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). The SHU scale is the Scoville score named after its creator, American pharmacist Wilbur Scoville. He invented the scale in 1912 to measure the pungency of peppers and chillies and their hotness.

Know what? I do get lit up at the vibrant sight of it, but I have not tasted Bhut Jolokia thus far. Although garnered ‘courage’ several times, I somehow couldn’t help at the nick of time!

Any takers? How hot do you like it? Please let me know in the Comments section. Look forward!
