Don’t get stuck in a rut with your writing

When it comes to writing, everyone has their own go-to style, voice, and technique. A format they like to stick to and feel most comfortable with during the development stages of a piece.

For some, it’s a formal approach, while others opt for a more conversational tone. There are creators who believe you should publish based on what’s trending and those who think it’s better to get to know your audience first, then accommodate to their needs.

Which is all great advice, depending on your objective.

However, I do think it’s important to break the mold every once in a while, explore the writing world and not get too caught up in one genre, style, or format.

In doing so, it allows your creative mind to wander, keeps things interesting, and reduces the risk of you becoming bored or stagnant in your craft.

Of course, you may not have the option to venture off in whichever direction takes your fancy, you could be wrapped up in building a personal brand for example, or be writing for a publication where a certain persona must be kept at all times, but don’t let that be a reason for your ingenuity to be stifled.

Go find your own little corner of the internet where you can be wild and free and delve into new writing adventures. There are plenty of ‘playgrounds’ out there for you to explore.

Platforms like Medium, WordPress, and Vocal (to name but a few) allow you to expand your thinking, hone your skills and rummage around in realms of writing you might less indulge.

In the past, I’ve tinkered with long-form articles, short-form, flash fiction, poetry, informational pieces, silly pieces, and I’ve enjoyed the challenge of each.

Entering into each endeavor with a mindset to explore, zero expectations, and a willingness to fail gave me the freedom to let my fingers do the talking without consequence and gifted me the chance to appreciate the joys of writing on a variety of levels.

I think every creative person should have space where they can just play, experiment, and broaden their horizons.

So, if you feel you’ve been stuck in a rut with your writing as of late, why not spread your wings and go in search of something different?

It could be the breath of fresh air you need to rejuvenate your innovative mindset.
