Don’t Fear the Reaper

Classic Blue Oyster Cult song ahead of its time, but still relevant

The band Blue Oyster Cult had a smash hit in 1976, called “Don’t Fear the Reaper,” which is still an amazingly relevant classic even today. It deals with the transition from this life to the next and explains how there is no reason to fear the inevitability of a natural life process.

The lyrics are amazingly prescient, uplifting, and positive.

“Seasons don’t fear the reaper,

Nor do the wind, the sun, or the rain

We can be like they are”

It is also a romantic ballad about immortal love stories like Romeo and Juliet, together now in eternity. Death is an inevitable part of life.

“Love of two is one, Here but now they’re gone

Don’t be afraid, Come on baby

And she had no fear, And she ran to him

Then she started to fly, They looked backward and said goodbye

She had become like they are, She had taken his hand

She had become like they are, Come on baby, don’t fear the Reaper.”

The song is not about a murder-suicide pact, like some people think. The song is really about eternal love and is about a couple who wanted to be together in the afterlife.

Because death will come to us all. It is a natural process, nobody lives forever. We need to make the most of each day of our lives and not fret about something that is inevitable anyway.

We will all eventually transition to the next stage of our existence. We are all immortal, we are all forever beings.

We are the light, the life, and the spirit. Our souls are immortal and cannot die. All our thoughts, all our hopes and dreams, all our imagination and optimism will transition to the next level of awareness.

The Law of Conservation of Mass states that matter is neither created nor destroyed. It is just transformed into another state of existence.

For example, when wood burns, the mass of the ashes, soot, and gases equals the original mass of the wood before it burns.

It is the same for people. Where we all came from is up for debate, as is the notion of the inevitable destination of our souls as we transition to the next level of existence. We are all starseeds.

Most people, especially in the Western world, believe in the old school, conservative Christian tradition of heaven and hell, angels and devils, being judged by an omniscient God at the entrance to the pearly gates.

That works for them because I believe that people will transition in the afterlife into whatever they believe in during their short time on earth which we call life. You choose your own afterlife.

Others, especially those who study Eastern religions, believe in reincarnation and second chances, sometimes chosen and sometimes randomly assigned.

They return to earth in a different form, to complete their soul’s mission. Old souls may choose not to come back into human form at all but just come back as spirits or guides and help other people.

Our souls are comprised of energy, whirling and swirling, spinning, and dancing around all sorts of concepts and ideas. We are all a complex web of thoughts, emotions, and feelings.

The incredible depths of the human mind are no accident.

Why would we even have such thoughts, such dreams, such aspirations if there was no continuation of our existence after our mortal bodies pass on to the next level? Our souls are a self-contained force of energy, of being, of consciousness. Our souls can never die.

There is a definite connection between who we are now and who (or what) we become. Our souls live on into eternity, despite the inevitable transition into another stage of consciousness when we shuffle off this mortal coil.

Maybe Stephen Tyler summed it up best in his teasing, pleasing song, “Dream On- Nobody Knows Where It Comes and Where It Goes.”

No matter what, there is no reason to fear the Reaper. It is just a representation, a symbol of the gateway between the here and now and the next level to the then and when.

We will all find out in due time. In the meantime, don’t stress, and don’t worry about what we have no control over. Que sera, sera.

Enjoy the here and now. Choose to be good. We are all connected…
