Police officers are generally respected.
Most people will not hang up on a call from the police if they believe it is really a police officer. They will undoubtedly think it is legitimate and important. The scammers are now impersonating police with a new scheme to try and cheat people out of their money.
This scam has a person claiming to be the police calling an unsuspecting person on the phone. The would be victim is told that there was a subpoena issued to them that was ignored so that resulted in a fine.
A subpoena or witness summons is a writ issued by a government agency, most often a court, to compel testimony by a witness or production of evidence under a penalty for failure. [Wikipedia]
There have been warnings from the police that this scam is being used at the present time.
The internet is full of scams and is a scammers meal ticket.
Another subpoena scam has been around for a while. It entails a phishing scams that sends phony subpoena email messages to people such as company employees. The email will contain a link that, if and when opened, will install a program that records the user’s computer keystrokes and forwards the information to the criminals.
The scam emails are numerous and sometimes hard to detect from real messages. It is best to be aware of scams and delete suspicious emails. Hang up on calls that are possible scammers and do not click on links provided in emails that appear to be scams.
The criminal scammers are working hard to take the money of innocent and unsuspecting victims. Be safe!
