Summarize

“Don’t be proud of your college; make your college proud of you.”

I don’t know where I heard or read this quote, but it speaks volume as a college student.

Currently, I’m a junior at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign majoring in journalism with minors in political science and history. In yet another remote semester, college is especially difficult these days.

But that hasn’t stopped me from succeeding.

I chose to attend Illinois over three years ago because of its academic reputation, perfect location and the fact that I’ve always wanted to be an Illini. During my time at Illinois, none of those facts have changed.

I’m proud of my school. I’m proud of its accomplishments and successful alumni. Thinking about this has led me to my own thoughts about Illinois too.

In a year from now, I will graduate from Illinois and enter the work force and the real world. As much as I’m proud of Illinois and everything it’s done to be one of the best public institutions in the country, I want Illinois to be proud of me just the same.

When I read the quote above, I took that statement to heart. How do I make Illinois proud of me during my career?

Finding My Passion

Since a young age, I have always wanted to be a writer. I always wanted to see my name in print. Now, both of those dreams have come true.

I serve as a senior columnist for my school’s student publication The Daily Illini. I write articles on Medium. I even now have a book under my belt.

I knew I wanted to write in life, and college has helped me find and pursue my passion even more so. I couldn’t be more proud of myself and what Illinois has done already to help me achieve my dreams.

Working Hard

Nothing in life comes easy. Hard work and dedication is key to pursuing your dreams and achieving whatever you set your mind to.

From constant encouragement by peers and professionals to sharpening my skills every day, I’m working hard toward my passion and the life I want.

Michael Jackson didn’t become a great basketball player over night. Warren Buffett didn’t become a successful businessman over night. They worked hard at it every day.

That’s why it’s so vital to do so when following your dreams.

Staying Consistent

You have to show up every day. There are no exceptions.

When you stay consistent in pursuing your passions and doing what you want, you will reach your destination faster than if you only worked at once a week.

There will be days you don’t want to. There will be days when you just want to go back to bed. Eliminate those negative feelings from your mind and get going.

You have to pay your dues every day, and in order to do so, you have to stay consistent.

Closing Thoughts

I’m proud to be attending Illinois and being an Illini every day. I’m proud of my school.

I know many folks already proud of me at Illinois. If I keep following my dreams achieving my goals, maybe one day the school as a whole will be proud of me too.

I can’t wait to be a successful alumni that supports the school every day. That will be one of the greatest jobs in the world.
