Done is Better Than Perfect
5 things That May Stand in Your Way and How to Deal With Them
Getting our tasks done is one of many challenges we face daily, whether it is our basic tasks or complex ones necessary to our goal achievement.
And here are the things that may stand in your way, and how to deal with every situation;
1-Procrastination
The first challenge that I want to talk about is procrastination or delaying our tasks to a later date. What I love about procrastination, is that it tells us the truth that we do not tell ourselves!
Because if you keep on postponing something, then it only means that you do not want it enough to work on it, right?
The 5-second rule
I have heard many successful people talking about the 5 seconds rule, and it seems that it is very efficient for dealing with “Procrastination”. There is a book named “The 5-second rule” written by Mel Robbins in which it explains this principle with more details, based on scientific studies and researches.
It comprises a very simple principle, and that is when the thought of doing a certain task pops up in your head, you have a void of 5 seconds in which you can engage in your work before your brain gets in your way. What you have to do is take advantage of this vulnerability of your brain, and when you remember a task, start working on it with no thought, to trick your brain and keep it from standing in your way.
2-Making excuses
The excuses that you might tell yourself to avoid getting things done are mostly fake. You might say that you do not have time, or that you are not ready for it, or even that you do not have enough resources to start. Do you think people who achieved great things in life started with everything on their side? Of course not.
But let’s dispel every single excuse;
Time
The “not having time” excuse is fake because everything is about priorities. Everybody has 24 hours per day, the difference stands in the way we spend our time. And if you can make time for yourself to watch your favorite TV show or spend 2 hours gaming, then you might want to reconsider your priorities. I am not telling you to spend 20 hours of your day working, but if you have high standards and goals, you need to be honest with yourself. Are you ready to sacrifice your leisure time for the sake of your goals? Because if there is one quality that we notice in every successful person, it is the ability to work more than average people. If you are not ready to take this step, be honest with yourself.
It is totally okay if you want to lead a peaceful life on a 9 to 5 job and taking the rest of the day off spending time with your family and closer ones.
Not being ready
You should know that this is the biggest lie you can ever tell yourself, because you will never feel ready enough, and being ready is something that you gain during the process, not before. It is our fears that give us this feeling of insecurity because of our lack of knowledge and lack of experience. And how to get rid of it? By jumping into the pool! I.e. by experiencing, making mistakes, and learning.
Not having enough resources
Nobody does, but if you start now, you will acquire enough experience and knowledge, which will give you the ability to take advantage in a better way of the resources than someone who has less experience and knowledge.
Something else that makes it better to start with less, is that the mistakes you are going to make will cost less. It is better to make a $1000 mistake than a $10000 one!
3-Seeking for perfection
Something else that may get in our way is seeking perfection, but as Gary Vaynerchuk says, “Done is better than Perfect”. Stop trying to achieve perfection, it is something that you cultivate along the way and the process.
Do not get my idea wrongly, I am not telling you to lower the quality of your work, but to raise it as much as you can, within the limits of what can be done. Because even if you have a perfect idea, a perfect plan, and strategy, if you do not put in the work then it is worthless. And no matter how many thoughts you give it, it may seem perfect to you, but once you start working on it, you realize that it is always easier said than done. That is why you need to focus on getting the work done more than perfecting the idea itself.
4-Setting goals and standards that defy the limits of your logic and beliefs
Self-honesty is very important and I cannot say it enough, if you set a goal in which you lack belief, or that defies the limits of your logic, then how do you expect yourself to work on it? Especially time-limited goals.
If you set your goal to be a millionaire, that is something achievable, but to set a deadline in 2 or 3 years, that defies your logic. And if you do not have enough faith in yourself, how can you work on something in which you lack belief?
I am not saying that it is impossible, I want to underline the fact that it has to be believable for you. Because setting higher goals is a very powerful way to progress and evolve in life. As Leslie Brown said, “Shoot for the Moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”
5-Talking too much about your goals
Talking about your goals, as I stated in the article above, will make your motivation drop. Because the more you talk about it, the more it gives you a sensation almost similar to the one you feel when you reach your goal, and this will drain your energy, which will make it harder for you to work on your goal.
That is why you should let your actions speak for themselves instead of talking without taking action.
Final thoughts
More things may get in your way while working on your goals, like fear of failure, which I talked about in this article:
I hope that my message was clear enough for you, and I hope that my words gave you a fresh perspective about life and the science of success, written with the deepest love of my heart!
