Donald Trump is Voldemort

I Think He’ll Take This as a Compliment

So, over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been on a Harry Potter kick, watching all the old movies just for fun and to relax. I haven’t watched the movies since I took my kids to see them in the theater. Most I’d only seen that first time. There are eight movies in all, based on the seven novels written by J.K. Rowling. I’m starting the last two tonight.

At first, they were fun, although I really dislike Harry’s aunt, uncle, and cousin. They’re so mean to Harry! Making him sleep in the closet under the stairs, belittling and threatening him all the time. As I moved through the movies, I noticed the plots became darker and darker as “he who shall not be named” became stronger and stronger. It wasn’t until I got to the fourth movie this week, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, that I made the sort of ridiculous connection to Donald Trump and Voldemort. This was the episode about Voldemort coming back to full-size, dangerous, and powerful, not looking normal, but battle ready.

To refresh your memory, he’s thrown into a cauldron, a barely living thing who has to be carried around, where ingredients are added, including bones, flesh, and Harry’s blood, and he arises from the cauldron supposedly restored. He calls forth some of his top minions from the past and immediately starts yelling at them, saying they should have done more to help him. The guy who had just cut off his own hand to bring the dark lord back whimpers and reminds V. that he did come back as soon as he knew where to find him, and V. answers, “Out of fear!” (what, he was expecting love?). There was no thank you for donating his hand to the cauldron elixir or for turning himself into a rat to escape detection for years. However, he does restore his freshly cut off hand and says he did prove himself useful the past few months. That was really big of him.

The rest of his followers he’d called to him are so anxious to renew their vows of servitude, and I couldn’t help comparing them to several people in the Republican party. Seriously. They’re falling over themselves to prove they still serve and are so happy he’s back just like the politicians after reading of Trump’s rise in the polls. I can just picture those who actually chose not to back Trump again panicking when he started to look a little less dead in the water (or cauldron). Then, V. turns to Harry and wants to duel, saying he’s going to kill him in front of all these witnesses, and no one will ever utter his name again. Only something goes wrong, and some of the people he killed in the past, including Harry’s parents, somehow show up and thwart the dark lord’s plans, and Harry gets away to fight another day.

In the next movie, non-supporters of V. go missing and are killed, imprisoned, and persecuted, and Harry is accused of lying about seeing “he who shall not be named” being up and running again. They blame the world’s panic on Harry for causing such alarm, and they accuse others of targeting and killing V’s enemies and the people who really pissed him off in the past. People are losing jobs, being kicked out of their homes, reputations destroyed and many are under attack.

And what do I see in the headlines this morning? Fanni Willis, the DA who is after prosecuting Trump, is on trial for misconduct, the Republicans killed their own bill, because Trump supposedly ordered them to, because he needed chaos to reign, Mayorka is being impeached, which hasn’t happened since the 1800’s, and the guy whose testimony led to the Republicans trying to impeach Biden was accused and is facing charges for lying in his testimony against Biden.

Meanwhile, income tax returns have shrunk, people are paying more in taxes than ever before (oh, except the rich people), we’re facing yet another government shutdown, Trump/Voldemort is promising revenge on everyone who has ever crossed him, and although he hasn’t been President in years, he’s still running the Republican party from wherever he is, whether it’s from one of the many courtroom settings he’s part of, the golf course, or any number of interviews, and if that’s not enough to scare you, according to some polls, he’s leading in the upcoming Presidential race! Now, if that’s not some twisted magic crap, I’d like to know what is!

There is hope, however. I mean, Harry Potter ended up defeating Voldemort, right? Harry’s a good guy, right? Yet, he still came out on top. I’m not saying Joe Biden is Harry, and I’m not sure I trust him to do a good job in the White House for another four years, but of the two, at least his goals don’t revolve around chaos, power, and revenge, at least not that he is stating openly, like Volde- I mean Trump’s agenda screams from the top of its lungs. I’m really not interested in who made who mad, at who was or wasn’t loyal to a former President, and I’m not one to hold or entertain grudges, so spare me all the petty plots of revenge in the making, will you please?

I, like so many other Americans, simply want someone in the government to work for the people, rather than themselves or others they either fear or with whom they wish to enjoy more power and privileges. Is that too much to ask?

Rough week, can you tell? Let’s all take the weekend to regroup, relax, and recapture some peace of mind. Are you with me?

Many blessings to all of you.
