Donald Trump has done a Great Service for Our Country

Let’s focus on what we have learned from his leadership.

Lessons learned

If we take a step back from our emotional involvement with the presidency of Donald J. Trump, I think we could see that he has provided us with ample opportunity to analyze the lessons we have learned from his example and in the long run, strengthen and modernize the governmental institutions of the United States.

His off-the-wall style has exposed potentially dangerous grey areas within our current traditions, rules, and regulations that should be part of an effort to make sure that our country never veers towards authoritarianism again.

His “fake news” claims over the years points out how we need to establish a new fairness doctrine. There ought to be penalties for media outlets such as Fox News, which claim they are allowed to stretch the truth under the guise of being an entertainment company and not a news organization.

We should establish clear guidelines, even something as simple as requiring a statement that the speculative nature of Fox and Rush Limbaugh’s show are for entertainment purposes only and should in no way be considered substantiated news.

Let’s use the last four years to strengthen our Democracy

The Trump presidency has also shown us how weak the enforcement branch of our government is when considering the Emoluments Clause and the ability of sitting presidents, his family, and his cronies to profit from the office.

Trump’s presidency exposed the weakness of the governments ability to enforce these laws with an administration currently in power. If I were a congressperson, I would certainly ask my staffers to draft a new legislative proposal which looks at strengthening our government’s ability to enforce this.

His presidency also exposed the poor state of civics education in this country. A very significant segment of the population showed us that they were willing to discard honored and cherished traditions and freedoms that our grandparents and great-grandparents fought and died for without so much as a second thought.

Trump pushing the borders of what is acceptable behavior within the system revealed that pumping our students full of rote memorization tasks for standardized tests has created a population incapable of critical thought. We are so poorly informed that many of us believe that the Democratic party is a larger threat to the United States than North Korea, Iran, or even our cold war enemy, Russia.

Help America to think again

We need to reestablish civics education within our schools. This would also have the added benefit of informing our younger citizens about how the government functions and what various types of work the government actually does. Right now, it seems that a large proportion of the population sees the government taking money from their paychecks, and with good reason, questions where that money goes and how effective our tax dollars are.

A propre grounding in civics education could empower them to better articulate their specific desires regarding how much funding the government needs to operate effectively and efficiently as well as making them aware of where exactly their tax dollars are being spent.

While it is unlikely that Trump will attempt an actual coup, seizing control of the government by force, he has exposed the danger of having a 2-month lame duck period of transition. In the 1700s and 1800s, this was necessary because of the level of technology at the time, but these days is an anathema to a well-functioning government.

One of the main reasons the attacks on September 11th were successful was due to the bogged down transition of power from Bill Clinton to George Bush. If abolishing an extended 2-month lame duck session will help prevent terrorist attacks, there shouldn’t be any opposition to doing away with this archaic tradition.

The humanity of our Founding Fathers

Along the same lines Trump clearly showed us how a nearly 300 year old document is ineffective at handling modern issues. The Constitution of the United States is a treasured document of its time period, the first of its kind and should be revered as such. However, we also need to realize its limitations as well as the limitations of our founding fathers’ vision when creating it.

It’s a testament to how far reaching their vision was that it has lasted this long, but we need to realize that modern problems require modern solutions. The founding fathers, as great as they were, were not perfect. Thomas Jefferson, the author of the document, stated just that.

The media, beholden to special monied interests has also been exposed for its lack of concern for the general welfare of the American people. They can no longer be considered the fourth estate of the government. They clearly operate from a perspective that serves their own short-sighted greedy interests with no care for the damage they are doing to the country.

Establishing a news media separate from the influence of money and emotionally appealing action movie entertainment should be made a priority. The stability of our country depends on it.

Now would be the time for a responsible and mature people to reflect on the last 4 to 40 years, consider the damage that has been done to our democracy and our population, and directly address the concerns that arise from a thoughtful, non-partisan analysis of the warnings that the Trump presidency has provided us.
