Dog and Morning
A Free-verse Poem
she sends me back to earth, this dog even the webs up here thick and sticky that cling to my thoughts trap neurons repeated firings in these copied days break free and out in the yard let loose my mind like my mermaid hair and notice here — a tree frog behind the tool shed a buried bath toy from before my son could walk becomes her joy and she carries it to her puppy den — a bed she created by destroying my hosta garden choose your battles and I do, again, with the invasive ivy and bamboo there’s some ancient pottery from the beginnings of my craft a disappointed cardinal at my empty bird feeder sings twice, then flies away and for once these morning sounds soothe my floating mind
