Fix it!
Does Your Business Have a Major Flaw?
Assessing Impact, Costs, and Consequences.
Have you heard the saying, “It takes one to know one?” I’m sure you have, and it’s probably something that has been said to you. As we all know, many people love to talk about themselves and their businesses, but even more people love to talk about others and their businesses. This post is meant for those who don’t like talking about themselves too much, so I want everyone else to keep reading it because there are some great tips here for you.
Is it a problem for your business?
The first step is to consider whether the flaw is a problem for your business. It’s not enough to identify what you think are flaws. You need to assess how much of an impact they have on your company.
For example, let’s say you’re working in a small startup, and one of your co-founders is always late with his work. Does this mean he won’t be able to deliver on time? Or does he just need more reminders about deadlines? If it’s the latter, then no big deal. You can talk through some strategies for ensuring everyone stays on schedule and keeps things moving smoothly without having too much impact on operations or productivity as long as everyone else keeps up their end. But he struggles with delivering work consistently and on time well. In that case, it may make sense for him to not only leave but also take another job elsewhere where he doesn’t have many responsibilities hanging over his head all day.
Once you’ve identified the flaws in your business, it’s time to figure out how much of an impact they have on your company. If any of these issues are causing problems for you or your employees, they must be addressed immediately.
What is the impact on your business finances?
Loss of customers.
Loss of revenue.
Loss of reputation.
Time and money spent on fixing the problem could have been better spent elsewhere in your business, like: hiring more staff or developing new products or services.
How long has it been in place?
If a flaw has existed for years, it’s likely profoundly embedded in your business’s culture.
Can you change it? If so, what are the consequences of not changing it? Is there another way to solve this problem without completely overhauling your system or process and potentially losing money on something else? How much effort will it take to change this flaw and make things right again, and will that effort pay off for you in the end?
Can you take immediate action to eliminate it?
If you can’t fix it now, will you be able to in the near future? If not, it’s probably not worth fixing. Can you make a plan for when and how you’ll fix it?
The next step is to consider whether or not this flaw is worth investing in. If you answer yes and only if, ask yourself, How much will this cost me? What kind of return on investment (ROI) will I get from fixing this problem vs. spending my time elsewhere? And finally, how much time do I have before someone else realizes how big of a problem this is for my business and beats me at my own game with their solution?
Will you be able to get support from key stakeholders or staff?
If you can’t get support from key stakeholders or staff, it’s a significant flaw. It would help if you got support from key stakeholders for your business plan to succeed.
If you recognize one of these flaws, fix it.
Fixing the flaw can make a big difference to your business, but not just because it will be more profitable or help you achieve your goals. The real reason is that fixing the flaw will make you happier and more fulfilled as an entrepreneur.
Businesses are constantly evolving, and they must do so. If you recognize one of the flaws we’ve outlined above in your own company, take action immediately to fix it.
By taking action to address flaws and improve operations, businesses can create a positive customer experience, increase profitability, and position themselves for long-term success.
