Does Publishing Twice as Much Double Your Medium Income?
I tried it. Here’s what happened…

Back in the summer, I thought the autumn weather would bring a new wave of readers, we’d all see an uptick in earnings, and people who’d been feeling the summer slump would get their mojo back.
However, I didn’t see much improvement in September’s earnings. So, I decided to double my output in October — see if publishing with greater frequency was worthwhile.
I’d like Medium to be a more significant part of my freelance income. “Wouldn’t we all!” I hear you say. It’s a tough one.
Kristina God reported recently that reads have been in decline across the whole platform, so anyone trying to make Medium a bigger part of their income is facing quite a challenge.
There was a peak in visitor numbers during the covid lockdowns, but recently, Medium has seen a slump. Visitor numbers have fallen to where they were back in 2018, even before covid. The end result? Lots of writers are vying for a slice of a smaller pie.
Not one to be put off by a challenge, I decided to publish two articles every day in October, instead of one. Here’s what happened…
- In September I published 29 stories.
- In October I published 50 stories.
Did my earnings double?
Nope.
- In September I earned $380.29
- In October I earned $409.99
I accrued an extra $29 for an extra 21 stories. Well, it’s not a disaster, but writing for print magazines definitely pays better. So, I should probably stick to publishing on Medium once a day and get back to the magazine writing for a more serious income. That’s OK. It was an experiment, and worth a try.
I think publishing daily is optimal for me. It means I have time to focus on the magazine work. Otherwise, it would be easy to let Medium swallow up too much time.
I’ll keep publishing daily and keep being me.
Key Message: Medium is a dynamic and changing platform. Experiment and make it work for you!
