Summary

The author of the article on Medium is questioning whether the platform censors content, particularly political articles, based on observations of reduced engagement with their recent posts compared to others.

Abstract

The author has published articles on Medium discussing political topics, such as the need for politicians to disclose their top donors and the media's treatment of Vivek Ramaswamey compared to Ron Paul. These articles received significantly less visibility and interaction than the author's other content, leading to suspicions of content censorship by Medium. The author notes that Medium's founder, Evan Williams, has political leanings that might influence content moderation policies. Additionally, the presence of figures like Colin Kaepernick on Medium's board raises further questions about potential biases. While the author appreciates Medium and its community, they express concern about the platform's commitment to being a fair and balanced space for all ideas, especially within the context of the Medium Partner Program.

Opinions

  • The author believes that Medium may be censoring political content that does not align with the views of its founder or board members.
  • There is a perception that articles critical of certain political figures or ideas are receiving less visibility, suggesting a form of shadow banning or algorithmic suppression.
  • The author is skeptical about the political neutrality of Medium, given the known political affiliations of its leadership and the historical presence of left-wing activists on its board.
  • Despite these concerns, the author values Medium as a platform for idea exchange and hopes it will remain open to diverse viewpoints, fostering discussions with kindness and empathy.
  • The author calls for transparency and fairness in content distribution, emphasizing the importance of a level playing field for all creators within the Medium Partner Program.

I recently wrote a few articles on the recent political landscape. One being about that politicians should have to make apparent and logo themselves with their top 10 donors and another on how Vivek Ramaswamey is getting the Ron Paul treatment by the media.

You can read both articles below:

It’s funny because these two articles have received zero likes and very little reach. They both got 80–90% less views than the stories before and after.

It leads me to think is Medium censoring content like other social media platforms have been accused of in the past?

So I wanted to do a little digging into this and was not surprised to what I found.

Medium was started by Evan Williams, who is at no surprise a possible democrat.

Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia that tells you all you need to know.

You can clearly see this San Francisco, Vegan, is not a fan of Donald Trump.

I know there have been other left wing activist on the board at Medium over the years like Colin Kaepernick, but the question is — “does Medium like other platforms like to censor what they don’t want users talking about.”

Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge fan of Medium and love the platform while connecting with other readers, but these two articles above call out things that should be addressed in politics on both sides of the aisle.

As a part of the Partner Program, I just want to make sure that we are investing our time in a platform that is truly fair and balanced, but do understand creators can do as they please.

Overall, I want this to be a platform where ideas of all kinds can openly be expressed and discussed with kindness and empathy, regardless of personal beliefs.
