Doctors vs Entrepreneurs

Finding the common ground!

What does it mean to be a successful Doctor or entrepreneur? This article solely focuses on the qualities these two possess to be excellent in their respective fields and also how there is a common ground for doctors and entrepreneurs. Below are the key observations I could make from being a Doctor and Entrepreneur myself. Of course, anyone can become a successful Doctor or entrepreneur. However, there are a few key personality traits that all (or almost all) successful entrepreneurs and doctors have in common.

5 common qualities Doctors and Entrepreneurs possess:

  1. Robust work ethic: If there’s unfinished business, they’ll show up at the office or hospital even on weekends or holidays and work until the job is complete. These are the people who always have work on their mind, even if they’re enjoying personal time.
  2. High-Pressure Situations: Being a doctor is all about making the right choices during emergencies like Myocardial infarction, brain stroke, or bowel obstruction. These situations require laser-sharp focus and sound judgment to get the patient to the other side safely .For Entrepreneurs, good judgment and making smart choices when faced with high-pressure situations like dealing with an unexpected software bug, breaking down of logistics, or addressing the supply chain crisis, etc. to normalize the flow in the company/project.
  3. Communication: This is an essential factor in any field. I want to focus on finding the similarities between these two roles. For a doctor, communication is vital as this plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and management of the patient. Doctors will always establish proper communication with their team, including junior doctors, superior consultants, or paramedics, regarding the diagnosis and treatment as a team. A doctor should also communicate better with the patient or the patient’s attendees to explain the nature of the disease or the treatment outcomes. Similarly, for a Software company Entrepreneur as an example, they will be in constant communication channel with the team from front-end developers to backend developers, from clients to investors and public.
  4. Time: On average, a medical doctor spends at least 7- 10 years of his life dedicated to becoming a successful doctor. An entrepreneur, on the other hand, also spends an average of 6–8 years of his life dedicated to his company/project before he can finally see positive cash flow or truly takeoff.
  5. Eager to Learn: No one really knows everything. A Doctor should always be looking out to learn newer methods of patient management or the latest diagnostic modules for faster and better diagnosis or keep up with global medical trends. Entrepreneurs, on the other hand, need to learn everything from accounting to marketing from the get-go. This kind of eager-to-learn mentality makes them so well-rounded. They’ve seen it, been through it, and learned it all before.

The above traits may be common to many fields, but I wanted to highlight these two roles as I have experienced both the medical and entrepreneur lifestyle in my life. Can Doctors make promising entrepreneurs? Or should they stick to being a Doctor? Can they manage both? In my opinion doctors can be good entrepreneurs.
