Summary

The article emphasizes the importance of creating content that is helpful to others rather than focusing solely on personal success and audience growth.

Abstract

The author reflects on a video by Gary Vaynerchuk, which criticizes the self-centered approach of many online content creators. Vaynerchuk points out that audiences can discern when content is more about the creator's desires, such as wanting to vlog full-time or make a million dollars, rather than providing value to the viewer or reader. This insight prompts the author to consider how they can be more helpful to their audience. The article invites readers to share how they either need help or provide help to others, fostering a community of learning and mutual assistance. Additionally, the author offers a resource, an ebook, to help readers enhance their productivity.

Opinions

  • Viewers and readers are perceptive and tend to disengage when they feel content is too self-serving for the creator.
  • There is a need for creators to shift their mindset from self-promotion to being genuinely helpful and providing value.
  • The author acknowledges the importance of community input and learning from others as a way to improve the helpfulness of their content.
  • The author believes in the power of shared knowledge and encourages a collaborative approach to content creation, with the goal of assisting others.

We Need To Be Helpful

How can I help you?

Yesterday, I came across a video of Gary Vaynerchuk talking about the things that keep people from success.

He mentioned that one pitfall is how self-focused online creators are with their content.

When someone asks him a question it’s all about “I” statements.

  • “I want to vlog full-time.”
  • “I want to make a million bucks.”
  • “I want to grow my audience to thousands.”

He said, ever so bluntly, that viewers (and readers for that matter) can always tell when it’s about the creator and not about the person viewing the content.

And so, they pass on to the next person.

It has me thinking more about how I can be more helpful to people rather than simply trying to grow my reach.

How Are You Helping?

And it made me wonder, how do others do this well? Where do you need help? Or how do you provide help for others?
