Do You Write On Medium? You Might Have Written a Book Without Realizing

Have you?

The average book length is 90,000 words.

Most articles on Medium are 5-minute reads or about 1,000 words.

Have you written 90 articles? Then you have written enough words to create a book.

Sure, a book needs a structure that is different from putting 90 articles together. I’m not suggesting you gather all your Medium articles in a PDF and go sell them on Gumroad.

The point is to make you realize the importance of small steps.

A big task is always made up of many small ones

Writing a book feels like a daunting idea. Like a whole lot of work.

Writing an article feels doable. Like a tiny bit of work that you can get done quickly.

But a book is made of chapters, chapters are made of passages, and passages are made of paragraphs.

You don’t have to commit upfront to writing a whole book. Sitting down with such a task is probably the fastest way to never accomplish it.

No, you sit down committed to writing a few paragraphs. The next day, you do the same. And the next, and the next, until finally will you have written your book. Or done whatever it is you want to accomplish.

I published 178 articles on Medium, which is basically 2 books.

Did it feel like I wrote 2 books in the last 2 years? Absolutely not.

Would I have committed to writing 2 books in 2 years? Absolutely not.

Did I put in the same amount of time into writing Medium articles as I would have for 2 books? Most likely yes.

It’s easy to dismiss the daily work you do towards something. But if you keep at it, one day you’ll look back and realize you’ve made it further than you ever would have thought.

If you’re discouraged, look back. Maybe that’s where you’ll find the motivation to keep pushing forward.
