Writing jobs
Do You Want To Write About Lawnmowers?
Trying to find your place in the world of writing? Sometimes it’s murky out there…
So much of starting your freelance career is figuring out exactly where and how you fit in.
What do you want to write? Content writing? How-to guides? Product descriptions? Personal stories?
Where do you want to write? On your own blog? For an online publication? A magazine?
There are countless options and paths to take.
I have been on a bit of a journey recently — attempting to force myself out of the old comfort zone.
In every case — to each their own. You have to find what works for YOU, ultimately. Consider it a personal process of elimination!
Onward to Content Writing?
A friend recently encouraged me to check out content writing. Worth a shot, right?
There are a lot of varying opinions on working “content mill” jobs. Just like there are varying opinions about everything in life.
Here is where I have been looking recently:
I applied to iWriter. They require you to write a 200-word bio about yourself, and why you want to work for iWriter. Next, is a 200-word test article in which they give you a predetermined title along with keywords to include. My assigned title was “Lawnmowers: Common Problems and Simple Solutions.”
When I sat down to write the article, I figured I should be able to do this quickly.
Lawnmowers seem simple enough?
Truth be told, I felt uninspired, staring at a blank word document, and the words refused to come out.
Blank brain = blank document.
The List Goes On And So Do I!
Lawnmowers may not work for me — but something else will, as I continue on down my list:
ContentFly: Writing various content for many clients. There is a writing test involved.
ProBlogger: This site is packed with information and blogging tips, and its job board, which is mostly made up of content and blogging jobs.
We Write Blog Posts: This link takes you directly to their job application. They require you to write at least 5000 words per week and pay $0.02 per word — It is also a ghostwriting position.
News Break: You can apply for their creator program to be approved and create content. * I have applied here — and still waiting.
Gramlee: Hires independent contractors to edit and proofread documents. A message on the Gramlee site indicates they receive hundreds of applications a week — still worth a shot!
WebFX: Hires all around the world for Content Specialists, Web Designers, and Social Media Account Managers.
The Urban Writers: You can click this link and it will take you directly to their hiring page. Editing, writing, and other positions are available.
Vibrant Life: This is an online magazine that publishes articles about health, wellness, spirituality, self-help, and mental health. Payment ranges from $100-$300 per article.
Scripted: According to their website, Scripted pays on average over 10 cents per word. You have to create a profile and pass a writing test first.
You Always Have Options
Though lawnmowers are not for me, I learned a lot about myself this past week.
We just have to keep going. One day and one step at a time. That is all we can do in life.
Go where your passions take you!
Don’t be afraid to reach beyond your comfort zone to find yourself — and take your writing to the next level!
