Do You Remember How You Died?

A poem

Do you remember it was a sunny day? It surprised you so much to notice how sunlight dared soak your surroundings — you always expected to die in the middle of a violent storm or, at the very least, during a soft, cloudy day.

Do you remember how you didn’t plead? You knew it had been enough, that more time would not make a difference — you always were a waster; it would be naive to expect a few extra days to matter.

Do you remember how everyone stared? Death fascinates us all, even when we claim we are afraid of her and her wicked gifts. Could it be that, at the core of us, we know she is a kind friend who will, finally, take us to the home we abandoned so long ago?

Do you remember all of the thoughts that, in a cloud of splendor, visited your mind? Old friends, past lovers, cherished enemies, the soulmate you let slip through your fingers, the city you never ventured into, and, of course, the dreams you always knew would never kiss you back.

Do you remember how silly you felt? So much fear, doubt, and hesitation and, in the end, this was it — the final answer.

All along, this was life, begging you to make love to her. She was teasing you, seducing you to come to the forest and play.

Dear, you never knew this is not a dress rehearsal you get to repeat night after night until the crowd demands you bring them some delight.

No, my beloved, this silly fantasy was all about us waltzing at the heart of a dandelion while a naughty child gets ready to blow.

Do you remember now, dear? Do you?
