Do You Like Your Previous Self?
I bet you do
Every stage in the evolution of a person has some advantages. If a person was aggressive in his adolescent years then it may have meant that he was not bullied, played aggressive sports, and may even be liked by the girls. These benefits that a person gets as part of being aggressive act as a hindrance in bringing about positive change in the person.
You are engrossed in your stage of evolution
When a person is in a particular stage of evolution then he is completely engrossed in it and has no view of what lies beyond his level. There definitely will be some positive qualities that his stage of evolution would provide to him and he would get attached to them. This attachment would then prevent him to look beyond what may possibly be a better reality.
When a person is at a particular level of evolution then it is like he is in a two-dimensional plane. He cannot see above or below. He just moves in all directions within his plane of existence and in the process gets some benefits that the particular 2-D plane has to offer. A good example of the 2D existence is that of the famous game Pacman where the person can move in a two-dimensional plane only and has experiences that are limited to it.
Circumstances force a different stage of evolution
A person stays in a two-dimensional world till circumstances force him to move to another level where he is again bounded within a different two-dimensional world. But the sad part is that the experiences of the person are spread across all the two-dimensional existence that he had until now.
Any stimulus can take his chain of thoughts to a previous self and his reaction may not reflect his current stage of evolution.
The benefits of earlier stage hamper growth
One must realize that every stage of evolution has its own advantages but if one has to move to a different level and not be bothered by his previous self then he needs to have the courage to foray into uncertainties. He should realize that there are a few things that he needs to let go but the benefits that the new level of evolution would provide to him would by far surpass the earlier benefits.
Example: Ram was an aggressive person while in his adolescent age. As a result of it, he was a good fast bowler in the game of cricket. He was not bullied by others and was even popular with some girls. These benefits that Ram got while in an adolescent age acted as a barrier to his future growth.
After engineering, Ram got placed in a good software company but there were aspects of him that were programmed in his adolescent years. If any colleague or boss would reprimand him then he would become aggressive. This caused him to face many untoward situations and at times his job itself was at risk.
Thus, Ram decided to let go of his attachment to aggressiveness. He performed catharsis to let go of all the fears that caused him to become aggressive in his adolescent years. Then he worked on internal conflicts that caused him to have aggressiveness in the first place. After that, he let go of the attachment to the various benefits that aggressiveness provided him at that time. He felt that maybe he would not be as good a fast bowler as he was when he had aggression. But other benefits like not being bullied or being popular amongst girls were false beliefs. If a person is happy and confident then he will not be bullied but rather praised by others. Also, a vast majority of girls want a guy who is emotionally stable.
After removing the emotional charge of the prior incidents during his adolescent years Ram internalized his new set of beliefs and eventually got rid of reacting to current stimuli based on his prior self.
Conclusion
Every stage in the evolution of the person provides him with quite some benefits. If a person wants to truly move to a higher stage of evolution then he needs to let go of those benefits. But I can assure you that the benefits that the new and higher stage of evolution would provide to the person would surpass all the benefits that his earlier stage provided to him. I know it requires trust in yourself and the ability to embrace the unknown that the new stage of evolution would provide but I can guarantee the result would be a better and happier self.
