Do You Feel Like You’re Going in Circles at Your Job?
Signs that you’re stuck on a hamster wheel instead of being in a career that you’re meant for
Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. — Steve Jobs
According to Business Insider, Americans spend about one-third of their lives at work. That’s 90,000 hours!
We take jobs for money, security, prestige, etc. But how much do we factor in how much we like what the job entails?
Sometimes we get in a bind and need to take any job just to pay the bills. But we can start thinking about how to get into a better job in the future as we’re bringing in a paycheck.
If you’re going to spend such a large part of your life going to a job, shouldn’t it be something that you like? I don’t want to spend that much time being miserable if I can help it.
Here are 7 signs that you are in the wrong job.
- You feel burnt out
- You dread having to get up, drive to work, and walk into the building
- You count down the hours each day till you can go home
- You try to tell yourself there are enough aspects of the job that you like to justify sticking it out
- You try to tell yourself that a raise would make it worth staying
- You spend a lot of time searching for different jobs on the internet
- Your thoughts are always drifting to your dream job
It’s much easier to come up with a dozen reasons to stay at a job you don’t like, and then go complain about how unhappy you are to your friends than it is to step out of your comfort zone and make a change.
Now, every job is going to come with some imperfections. Even if you work for yourself, you have to deal with the parts that aren’t glamorous.
If there’s something else you want to do, do it
What?
Yep.
You can make the decision to try something different. You don’t have to quit your job cold turkey. Make a plan. Save up some money first.
I don’t want to spend the rest of my working life doing something that I’m not happy with. I’ve wasted too many years in jobs that were not a good fit for me. I want to look forward to work each day. And I want that for others too.
I don’t want anyone to wake up in 30 years and wish they had followed their gut feeling to start that business or make that move across the country.
You don’t want to have those big regrets. Don’t settle in your job.
Don’t be a hamster.
Step out of the wheel and start moving toward the life you want.
