Do You Choose Bitter or Sweet?

How to view life’s complex beauty

“Beauty begins the moment you choose to see it.” ― Connor Chalfant

As I prepared a cup of Turkish coffee at home yesterday, I pondered the complexities of how we view life.

I got out the sugar and thought about the sweet moments in life. Adding sugar to the mixture would take away the bitterness. Drinking black coffee brings out the bitter notes but allows me to taste the hint of cardamom.

Yet another version is the choice of adding cream, creating a mixture of the two, and balancing the bitter notes like the teetering balance of our lives.

As I stirred a splash of cream into my cup, I wondered about every human’s different perspectives in life. How we choose to flavor our days can impact how we feel and act at every moment.

Not every moment in our days will be sweet, but we can choose to sprinkle a little sugar to balance out our experience. We can choose how we view things if we slow down to ponder.

Those bitter times show up to create who we are to become. They shape us into who we are by bringing powerful life lessons. Looking back, I would not change even the dark moments in my life because they allow me to treasure the sweetness more.

Everyone’s version of the truth may be slightly different, just like how they fix their coffee. There is a way we can come together to bring beauty into every sip through mutual understanding.

I have hope for these moments we are all living today. Sometimes the world may seem chaotic, but if we add a spoonful of sugar, a dash of cream, or choose to taste the pure flavors, we can become one.

I am someone who always sees the positive aspects of life. There are others who choose to mostly view the negative ones. Yet, I have hope we can come together on some common ground one day.
