Do You Believe in Love at First Sight?

Do Soul Mates exist? Are we somehow intertwined?

It’s official — we’re engaged. Photo by Joy Kelley

I never believed in love at first sight; the idea of soul mates was utter nonsense. My experience with love had been a series of train wrecks. I vowed never to get married again. Not ever.

Then I met Gary and all that changed.

We had both traveled difficult roads, before our paths wound around and finally crossed.

Many times we nearly met, passing by each other again and again. We lived in many of the same places at the same time; individually we enjoyed the same experiences. We both shopped at the Northwoods Mall in Charleston, SC, and ate Chick-fil-A in the food court. Separately, we laid on the same sand of Folly Beach. The Atlantic Ocean washed over both our feet. We frequented the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, SC, listened to the same howler monkey, and watched the same polar bear swim.

Charleston, Columbia, Augusta, Washington, DC; over and over, we nearly met.

It sounds like a worn out love story, but when we finally met the first time, there was something different. An instant spark. A familiarness I had never experienced. Gary was immediately my best friend and the love of my life.

I hate that Gary and I didn’t meet sooner. It saddens me that we will never celebrate 50 years together, because we met so late in life. When I shared this thought with Gary, he replied, “Sure we can. We only have to live to be 114.”

We only have to live to be 114.

That’s why I love him. That’s why I want to spend the rest of my life with him and squeeze in every little minute that we’ve missed.

He’s the reason I believe in love at first sight, the reason I believe in soul mates. He changed my life and changed my mind.

Will you marry me? — Gary

Absolutely. — Jane

If we had past lives, I have no doubt we were together; if we have lives in the future, we will find each other again. Our paths are always and forever intertwined.
