Website cookies may not be as good as the ones your granny used to make

Cookies have become the new terms and conditions of use. Nobody wants to have to go through a 5-minute reading to spend 60 seconds on a web page.

Most believe that cookies only work for advertising only, however, some may get more technical information from our devices.

We usually come across the following message:

“Cookies allow us to offer our services. By using our services, you agree to our use of cookies.”

And after that, we only have two options: “Accept” or “More information.”

I bet you’ve never stopped to read what permissions you are granting to the websites you visit.

Don’t feel bad, no one does.

Let’s see what cookies are and why we should always accept them (or not).

What exactly are cookies?

They are very small informatic files that are sent by websites and stored in our browser. They are in charge of monitoring and remembering certain information about us.

Some cookies work to remember your log-in data, others remember the items that you have added to your shopping cart.

It is also due to cookies that certain advertisements follow you to different sites. This information about you that they collect is sold to third parties to offer you personalized advertising.

These are some of the things that cookies may know:

  • Email addresses and passwords
  • Phone number and address
  • IP address
  • Device operating system
  • The web browser
  • Previously visited pages

Why do we have to accept them?

The pages have been using cookies for a long time. However, before we didn’t worry about them because we didn’t even know that our information was being stored.

Various privacy laws require pages to post what exact data they are collecting from users. Since 2018, you must accept or deny the cookies used by each site.

Although most of the time they present the information extensively and confusingly so that we simply accept it without reading it.

What can you do about it?

In essence, cookies work to improve our experience on the Internet. By remembering our data, we can navigate more fluently between different pages.

However, although some pages force us to accept cookies if we want to access them, you can delete them from your browser.

Just head over to tools or settings. Click on privacy and you can delete cookies.

Some experts recommend doing this from time to time, as some of the data that cookies collect can be very personal.
