5 Ways to improve this or that
You get the picture. The number of articles you can find with headlines like these seems endless.
Why?
Why is there such a multitude of ways for this and for that? That is because people have tried different methods and they are simply sharing what has worked for them.
Let’s look into two of the keywords here.
Number 1: Try
These individuals have done something related to what they are trying to achieve. So when you are reading a headline you are most likely going to click on that article because it is something you are interested in and how you can apply it to your life.
There are a couple of implications here. First, because a person has written such a ten-step article means they have tried. Trying implies they have made mistakes and fallen short of what they are trying to achieve. The list they provide allows a person to know what has worked for them.
Takeaways from #1
- Have a goal: if you decide to read the author’s list it can be a great source of information but knowledge does not automatically become a goal and an action. If you want the results outlined by the author, it has to be a goal for you. You have to make it your goal. As an alternative, you take a look at your existing goals and directly apply some of the author’s steps to what you are already doing. This, in turn, will enhance your process.
- Commitment: this is an absolute requirement. If you are not committed then you have just read another article that makes you feel good and inspires you for a second but otherwise, you are wasting your time if you are not going to end up applying it to your life. Consuming information can feel good but it will not help you get any further than where you are right now.
- Make it your own: the list you are reading worked for that specific person, maybe even in that particular order. Will it directly translate to your life? Maybe, maybe not. Do not hang all of your hopes on following their list exactly. However, I will say that following their list might help you build momentum towards achieving your goal. Over time, as you build momentum in practicing the author’s steps, you might decide to adapt those steps to the lifestyle that you want for your life.
Number 2: Method
As previously mentioned, the author almost certainly did not come up with these steps on their first try at achieving their goal. Time gave them the ability to see what worked and what did not. The method is not the goal. The goal is the goal, therefore, you have to be willing to change the methods (steps) that you are taking to ensure you are hitting the goal you want to hit.
Takeaways from #2
- Flexibility: if you decide you are going to go after a goal you want, you have got to be flexible in how you get there. You have to keep yourself open to new possibilities that exist for you in achieving what you want.
- Focus: your focus needs to be on the ultimate goal. There will be a lot that distracts you from achieving your goal. As the saying goes, you are your own worst enemy. The number of ways we can get in our way is endless. How do we get in our way? Our thoughts and our emotions serve our current habits and routines. They do not serve our goals and dreams. Therefore, when we start doing new things we face challenges because our bodies and minds are having to do, think and feel things it is not used to. Guess what, our thoughts and our emotions will step in to deter us from moving forward. We will experience discomfort but must ensure our focus is on the prize we are going after.
Whether or not we want to change in our lives we will always face it. Time continues to move forward. Technology is continually advancing. Change is everywhere and it is here to stay. We can either adapt and go with it or we can resist.
The number of ways to get something done is as unique and different as each person on this planet. There is no single way to get something done and just because it worked for someone does not mean it will work for you. It will come down to what you want, what you are willing to commit to, and what idea you turn into action and practice.
To answer the question posed in the title, yes. Ideas and hacks are great but they are only as good as the applications one makes to their lives based on those ideas.
You can create new habits and routines. You can do anything that you want badly enough. Give yourself time and give yourself space to try new things. Have a goal, commit, make it your own, stay flexible, and focus.
As always, Strive To Optimize!
