Do We Really Need A Career Goal?

Are career goals necessary? Can you achieve a lot of success and happiness without goals?

Are career goals absolutely needed?

No! Career goals are not necessary. You can achieve great things without having specific goals in mind, but it’s essential to have a vision of what you want to do with your life and career goals should be guided by that vision.

I am ambitious. I always want to achieve my full potential. When I was 22, my goal was to become a CEO by 30! As I got closer, I realized two things

  • Becoming a CEO is easy. Start a one-person company and call yourself the CEO
  • Chasing a title was a meaningless pursuit. I can call myself a VP, a Director or a Commander.

In the early ’30s, I realized I loved solving problems, especially those that were not easy. I pivoted my career towards management which gave me more opportunities.

Towards the mid-30s, I realized I loved helping others develop. I picked roles that primarily focused on assisting other people in succeeding.

How Do You Decide Career Goals?

The beauty of having no specific career goals is that it evolves with time and maturity. Your goals may change, but they should always be driven by your values.

  • What are your values?
  • What do you want to be remembered for?
  • What kind of life do you want to live?
  • What are your passions?
  • What are you interested in?
  • What can you see yourself doing for the rest of your life?

Start there and career goals will naturally follow.

What If My Career Goals Change?

This is a common concern but in this case, it’s important to keep in mind that Career Goals are not meant to be static. They’re fluid and can change as you grow and evolve into who you really want to become.

If your Career Goal changes (or doesn’t), don’t worry about it too much! Just make sure there’s still alignment with your vision of yourself and what you want to be known for.

What If I Don’t Know My Career Goal?

If you don’t know what you want to do with your life, that’s okay! Career Goals can be a lot of work and it’s not necessary for everyone. It’s essential to have some sort of idea about what you want to achieve in the long run, but if you don’t have any specific goals yet, don’t worry about it.

Just start by figuring out what’s important to you and go from there.

Career Goals can be fluid, so don’t feel like they need to be set in stone right away — just get started on something that makes sense given where you’re at today!

My Career Goals

I summarized my career as goals. My priorities are my Core Values, Mental Health and Happiness!

  • Do only what aligns with my core values
  • Do my job exceedingly well, be the best in the world if possible. If not, try to be.
  • Do only work that excites me as a person, never work just for a paycheck
  • Work with great people, add value to their lives (at work)
  • Measure success by the number of people I’ve helped along the way

Conclusion:

Career goals are not necessary. You can achieve great things without having specific goals in mind.

It’s essential to have a vision of what you want to do with your life. Your career goals should be guided by that vision.

  • What are your core values?
  • What are your passions?
  • What are you interested in?
  • What can you see yourself doing for the rest of your life?

Find those things and start there. The rest will follow.
