Summary

The article emphasizes the importance of tongue scraping as a crucial part of one's morning routine, to be done before consuming coffee or water.

Abstract

The article "Do This One Thing Before Your Morning Coffee" suggests that tongue scraping is an essential morning habit, more critical than the commonly discussed morning routines. It highlights that this practice, which takes only five seconds, not only helps prevent bad breath but also aids in removing toxins that the body has worked overnight to expel. Experts believe that most cases of halitosis originate in the mouth, with a significant portion of mouth bacteria residing on the tongue. The article advises using a tongue scraper instead of a toothbrush to avoid smearing bacteria and suggests purchasing stainless steel scrapers, possibly with an 'Ayurveda' designation, over plastic ones, which can be found in most supermarkets or pharmacies. The proper technique involves placing the scraper on the tongue and pulling it down with light pressure until no more coating is visible.

There are countless articles on Medium on what the perfect morning routine is. This isn’t going to be one of them!

I don’t care whether you spend one hour on your procedure or if you follow a simple ‘wake-up, coffee, write’ routine. But there is one thing you absolutely MUST do once you’re out of bed!

Scrape your tongue!

I’m still surprised at how many people don’t know about this.

Preventing you from bad breath is only one benefit of it.

Experts believe that 90 percent of all cases of halitosis (bad breath) have its roots in the mouth. And 80 percent of bacteria in your mouth lay on your tongue.

You will feel the results right after the first time you try it.

The reason you should do it before drinking your coffee or even water is because you would reabsorb the toxins that your body worked so hard to expel overnight.

Your body processes everything that was consumed that day. Toxins begin to form and are visible as a coating on the tongue the next morning.

When you scrape your tongue, you can see that coat, well… scraped off.

How can you do it?

Don’t brush your tongue with your toothbrush. Some people do it, but you will only smear the bacteria around and onto your toothbrush.

You need a tongue scraper.

There are different scrapers out there. Personally, I like the stainless steel ones that look something like this:

I suggest you simply type into your search engine ‘tongue scraper ayurveda’ and choose a supplier of your trust.

Why ‘Ayurveda’? Ancient Ayurvedic medicine recommends tongue scraping as a daily practice.

There are also plastic scrapers that you probably get in each supermarket or your local pharmacy. (But personally, I find them a bit harsh on the tongue.)

Place it on your tongue, and with light pressure, pull it down.

Once there is no more coating coming off, your tongue is clean, and you can continue with whatever your morning routine contains. Sorry for the interruption 😉.

Scrape away!
