Do This Before Your First Blog

Are you ready to make money from blogging?

You’re almost set on posting your first blog. I would assume you want to use Medium not only to blog and show your creative side online and collecting paychecks while doing so.

You’re probably like how I was a month ago: reading every article about making money writing on medium. I still read a good 35–40 articles a day trying my best to learn about all these different platforms whether it’s involving finance, marketing, and money. It’s procrastinating but in a good way.

It’s finally time to start posting. Enough with reading other articles because you shouldn't be procrastinating before posting.

Before you do anything, I highly recommend joining the Medium Partner Program. This program (when you get accepted and finally join) will pay you monthly based on how much the readers look through your blog, it’s perfect if you want to earn money for the hard work you’ve written. As a writer, you deserve it. So basically:

The longer other people on Medium read your writing, the bigger your check will be.

Consistency is key. Medium will reward hardworking writers by giving them a bonus. If you’re constantly making new content you’ll be rewarded in the long run. I've read some articles where writers got a $500 bonus. Even a $50 bonus is amazing for aspiring writers.

Try not to get too invested in thinking that you’re going to be making money early on because you definitely won’t. It’s not impossible don’t get me wrong and please, let me know if you’ve done it yourself but what I’m trying to say is: focus more on the writing talent you have and don’t think of the money when first starting out. Stay focused on the content and being as consistent as possible when posting and it will pay off eventually

Now let’s begin…

Set a schedule for yourself

The best way of staying consistent on Medium is to make a monthly schedule of the blogs you intend on posting. At the beginning of each month write down the dates of when you want your blogs posted and stick to that schedule all month.

Have a specific goal of how many times you want to post a blog a week and separate it between the days of the week. Think of it as you being the boss of yourself. Don’t focus on the stats. Posting consistently is the ultimate way of telling Medium to get your attention.

This Forbes article describes how Neuroscience explains that writing down your goals will actually help you achieve them.

Don’t worry about the word count

Too many people are worried about how many specific words they need to fit to favor the algorithm, but when in reality (especially when starting out) it doesn’t really matter as much compared to the titles and images of a blog. The content is the most important part.

Just write how many words you want. If you think you’re done writing, then you’re done with it. Pushing yourself to write as many words as possible will start making you lose passion for writing and thus, the consistency you’re striving for takes a punch in the face.

If you want to submit your work to publications you would have to make sure to follow the guidelines carefully because some publications prefer to have articles with a specific amount of reading time.

For example, if you want to publish one of your articles to a publication with a lot of followers like ILLUMINATION you’d have to read through their guidelines and see what the preferred word count and/or reading time is. If you would rather put out articles only under your profile, then feel free to write as long or little you want. Don’t tire yourself out or stress.

Follow and show engagement to others

It helps to communicate with other writers on Medium. Start by giving them claps or writing something nice down and follow them. Find those bloggers like Samra who provide you with advice and tips for making money on Medium.

When showing engagement to others in the Medium world most of the time they’ll do the same thing back for you as a friendly gesture.

Connecting to Twitter is another great way of connecting with other writers on this platform. It can also be used to promote your own articles as well. Almost everyone on Medium uses Twitter so the opportunities are endless.

Make drafts on Google Docs

When I say drafts I’m talking about completed blogs that are sitting in your google docs file. When I blog, I write down articles in advance that way I just copy and paste from my docs and straight into Medium. Obviously, there are extra things you have to do like finding the right keywords and putting a crisp image on the thumbnail but it saves a lot of time.

If you want your work to be perfect. I recommend editing the rough draft so there are no grammar mistakes. That also gives you the chance to add tags relating to the topic you write so make sure you use those too.

It’s best to blog and upload in the morning.

Join affiliate programs

Affiliate marketing is the way to go for blogging. By joining affiliates and sharing your own custom link they give you when joining the program, you get a decent commission after sharing your associate link. Affiliate marketing is definitely trending as one of the best ways to use your blog.

Readers aren’t dumb so don’t get the idea to completely cover your blogs in ads and referral links to affiliate programs. I know I would be annoyed if I was trying to read something but the whole post was enshrouded in links to all these different websites. It’s best to add only a couple to each blog.

Here are some of the best affiliates to join:

  • Bluehost
  • Amazon
  • Shopify
  • Clickbank

Hopefully, this helped you out. Your main focus should be how good your content is rather than worrying about making money right away. Hard work pays off in the end, it always does.

Expect no clicks on any of your articles when first starting. Growth comes very slowly, especially with these platforms. Make sure your first priority is the content you post!
