Do This And Your Creativity Will 10X…

If you don’t already do this, you’re missing out!

Showering is probably the best method of idea generation to ever exist.

The only problem is that you forget all those wonderful epiphanies the moment you step out of the steaming bathroom.

It’s a shame really.

Just imagine how far humanity would’ve advanced by now if we collected together everybody’s shower thoughts that had ever existed in history, all the way back to 1767 when the first shower was invented!

We probably would’ve cured cancer by now!

Ok, I am exaggerating a bit, but you get what I’m trying to say.

The point is when you are forced to do an activity that’s mundane and dull, your brain naturally kickstarts into creative mode to try and fill the boredom.

You can test it out if you don’t believe me.

Try this right now:

Turn off your phone or computer and take out your headphones and just have a look around you for 2 minutes.

Chances are, if you are reading this article on a bus or car, you’ll dart your eyes out the window and start appreciating the beautiful scenery. You’ll observe the people around you and wonder about what they are chatting about — perhaps you’ll even make up a fake story in your mind on what you think the conversation is about.

If you are reading this at home in your office or bedroom, you’ll start looking at the walls and furniture around you, contemplating the current position you are in and why you are at such a failure in life as a whole…

Fine, perhaps I’m just describing what I’d do myself but either way, this trick really works!

Honestly, when I’m not deeping about life and existence, sometimes the most genius ideas just come to me and I’m often left wondering “How the fuck did I think of that?”

It might sound arrogant but I’m sure you felt the same way too at some point in the past.

Obviously, not every single idea I get is deserving of a Nobel Prize and frankly, most of the time it's just random daydreams mixed in with some weird and wacky thoughts. But still, that doesn’t take away from the fact that your mind is this wondrous and complex object waiting to be exploited and yet, you’re rarely giving it the opportunity to do what it does best.

Think about it like this:

If you give a child a new toy to play with. After a week or so, they’ll become bored with it and ask for something else.

But, on the flip side, if you give a child nothing to play with, eventually, he or she will start “making” toys out of the stuff he has around (sand, mud, paper, strings, etc).

This is exactly what kids were like before the smartphone and iPad era and you know what the great thing is?

They’ll never get bored!

See, external stimuli are limited in the way that you always have to be in the “receiving” frame in order to experience it. When there’s no more left, your brain punishes you by sending out chemicals that make you depressed and sad in an attempt to get more of it.

However, with internal stimuli, it’s fantastic since it places you in the “giving” frame which is your brain’s natural state. You’ll never run out of it because your brain will just create more and every time it does, it rewards itself for its hard work by producing a bit of dopamine to give you a little boost of motivation.

It’s like killing two birds with one stone!

You get endless amounts of ideas while your brain rewards you for it!

Some practical advice…

Every single day, we flood our brains with external stimuli from our scrolling through TikTok and YouTube, to reading up on the news, to indulging in the latest Netflix show, and we never give it a break.

It’s not only detrimental to our mental health but it’s also just a big waste of time.

Now, I'm not saying you should just chuck your phone and laptop out the window because that’d be stupid.

But, what I am saying is that you can work to lower the hours you spend every day scrolling through pointless videos and memes slowly over time by dedicating just a few hours a day focusing solely on activities that get your brain juices flowing.

Whether that be writing, singing, drawing, or building, find a creative hobby you always wanted to get into and go learn that for the next 60 days.

If you enjoy it, then that’s great, but if you don’t, move on to something else.

Just as long as you are innovating instead of consuming, you’re good!

Another tip I want to add — go outside and take a walk. Breathe in the freshly photosynthesized air and let your mind wander a little. Do this for 30 minutes every now and then to take your mind off work and the stresses of life and you’ll really start to appreciate the little things in life.
