Do not become [job name], do [something]

“What do you want to become later as an adult?”

In highschool, I heard that a lot and as an undergraduate it got even worse.

“What you are studying seems very interesting, but what kind of job will you have at the end?”

As I study Ecology, it’s never easy to find an answer.

“Hm, I can work as a professor at university or I can work in an international organization…”

As you can see, my answer is a bit vague. I think I’m not alone in this case. Let’s face it — we’re a generation who does not know what we will become. It is a bit stressful because we’re pressured by our parents, our family and society.

Ignore them! Ignore them all!

People judge others depending on their job, their income, their social success. Do not become someone because society wants it.

You should not worry about becoming [job name] because it does not mean anything. Here are three reasons why becoming [job name] doesn’t mean anything:

• First, you do not know all the job names, just google “weird job names” and you will see how entertaining some of them are.
• Second, some general job titles are in reality very different depending on the company or organization you are working for. The obvious one is Project Manager, or, even better: CEO. There are just rank names. We come back at the social success, those titles are for others, for society, not for you. Unless your only goal is to be accepted and highly “loved” by everyone. But don’t forget : being loved by everbody is being loved by anybody.
• Third, the jobs of tomorrow are not the same as today. The world is changing so fast. Thanks to the power of internet and high speed communication, billions of brains are connected together. Those brains learn, exchange and create. Because of this fast-evolving world, new jobs will be invented and other will need to be created.

Here is THE solution! Do not become [job name], do something!

Participate in building this community, local and global. Create a blog, create a youtube channel, create value.

So many opportunities to do things today, thanks to the internet. Opportunities to connect with thousand of people like you.

By doing that, you will learn so many things and for sure you will find a job.

Or maybe not.

Maybe you will create your job, a new job. Maybe you will find one problem of the society and you will find a solution to solve it.

If you do so, you will become something. You will become an entrepreneur.

And as I said earlier, it’s only a title and it doesn’t mean anything. Or maybe it means one thing. It means that you are doing something. Something novel.

It means that you are changing the world, you are creating “something”, so the people can become this [something].

Next time somebody asks you what do you want to become, just answer:

“I don’t want to become anything, I want to do something”
