My interest in writing piqued to a high level this last couple of weeks leading to an attempt to write here in Medium. After getting some decent response to my first article on Anticipation, I got highly motivated. The initial reaction was gratitude for all the people to have read it. But then, I felt motivated and my interest to write grew. This is not a “How-to?” post where I explain how to sustain interest. This is just a self introspection from my reality on the nature of interests.

Are interests like a flower, that grows from a bud slowly and blossoms to show off all its colors and then wither and die; or is it like liquid rock cooling and forming crystals that live forever silently?

Interests come and go on a daily basis. For example, interest to learn to cook. Some days, they are sustained enough so that I end up cooking something delicious, but other days they just wander off where I end up ordering food. Is writing going to be a similar interest, moving through me on its own interest, some days giving great joy to write and others making it hard to focus on one topic?

The nature of interest is that it comes back again and again, sometimes as the same and sometimes different. Whenever the mind’s curiosity increases, interests instigate the motivation to perform an action. Is interest then just curiosity’s way of passing time? Sometimes leading to actions, sometimes laziness.

Do interests die when the actions performed don’t produce a favored result? Or does interest just take a break, re-strategize and come with a new bundle of curiosity? Do interests die when a favored result is actually produced from the action or does it lead to more curiosity, creating a new circle of interests and actions? In my case, it is definitely the latter, the more I learn, the more curious I am about things. If all of science is observing reality through different lenses, interests are taking us in different paths, looking at the same reality through different perspectives. Is the nature of my interest any different from yours, if all it does is feed our respective curiosity in different things? Interests keep moving us forward, helping us take action to climb our own personal mountains and conquer.

If the whole of Human Interest is represented as one, it is making the world more curious leading to more actions and a never ending quest of complete understanding.
