What is beginner’s luck? It is when a beginner or novice experiences an unusual amount of success at something over someone who is an expert and has been doing it for a while.

Professional bowlers practice by bowling up to 100 games per week, some more, some less. The odds of a professional male bowler bowling a perfect game, which is a score of 300, are 460 to 1. The odds of a random adult male bowling a perfect game is 11,500 to 1.

So when Rich’s parents used to bowl and his dad would come home and say he bowled a perfect game, meaning a score of 300, it would have to be beginner’s luck. He never practiced. He bowled two games per week at tournament. Yet, I remember him getting a perfect score more than once.

He was a novice bowler with beginner’s luck. He experienced an unusual amount of success at bowling over some of the professionals who had been doing it for a while.

I’m sure there are tons of examples of this kind of luck, lottery winners, video game players beating the boss on the first try, etc.

Do I have beginner’s luck? Not usually. Do I believe in beginner’s luck? Yes, I believe in beginner’s luck. It might be luck, or it might be they have a skill they didn’t know they had, but either way, they beat the odds.
