Do Heaven And Hell Really Exist?- Swedenborg’s Theory
What happens to us when we die?
There are a lot of undiscovered mysteries about life that we will probably never actually get a definite answer to while we’re in our physical bodies. One of these mysteries is where we go after we die. What do heaven and hell look like? Do they actually exist? How do I know if I’m going there or not? These are all questions that have passed through our heads at one point in life. Although we’ll never know until our time comes, there are many good theories out there.
One theory that I strongly believe in has been created by Emanuel Swedenborg who lived from 1688–1772. He experienced an intensely strong spiritual awakening in 1745 and from that point on documented every experience he had with the spiritual realm. Swedenborg’s theories consisted of the correspondence between the physical world and the spiritual world, the structure of heaven and hell and the lives of angels and devils, the interaction between the soul and body, and the interconnectedness of faith and charity. His theories align the most with my personal theories and also make the most sense in terms of spirituality and the laws of the universe which is why I believe it holds a lot of truth.
What Is Dying Like?
According to Swedenborg, who was granted the opportunity to experience death, when you die an angel sits by your side and helps you through the entire process. If you’re a spiritual person you can see how this would make sense because angels and spirit guides are around us 24/7. We can connect with them at any point and they help guide us down the right path when we’re alive. It would only make sense they would also be there to help us transition into the afterlife as well. Swedenborg says that anyone who is transparently evil or transparently loving in life will be thrown straight into heaven or hell after death. However, for most of us that probably won’t be the case as transparency is a hard thing to master.
Right after our soul fully leaves our body, we’re placed into a realm in between heaven and hell which Swedenborg refers to as the “spirit world.” When you’re in the spiritual world, it will look just like your life on earth. You won’t even feel dead because you’ll feel exactly the same as you did when you were alive. Once you enter this realm you’re able to meet up with your friends and family that have also passed and they will become your new guides. The point of this world is to figure out and clear up any problems that you had on earth. This doesn’t mean you’re actually fixing the issues you had on earth, but rather coming to terms with everything and letting go of any lingering feelings so you can be at peace. Think of it as continuing the healing journey that you were on when you were alive. You can stay in this world for years depending on how long it takes you to sort out your issues.
When we die we no longer have our physical bodies, just our souls which means we are now our higher selves — our true selves. Swedenborg says that inherently evil spirits will continue to be evil while good spirits will continue to be good. This poses the question, is there such thing as being inherently evil? I personally believe there is no such thing as a bad seed and that no matter how evil someone may seem, everyone still has a little bit of light in them. However, when evil overpowers the light then you become a negative spirit even in the afterlife and will face the consequences.
Where Do These Spirits Go?
Personally, I do believe in heaven and hell but I do not believe they actually match the descriptions they are given. I don’t think hell is actually a fiery pit of doom that you’re cast in for eternity. In fact, I don’t think it's on fire at all. Our creator has the most forgiving spirit to ever exist, why would he send us to suffer for eternity with no way out? I think if it does exist, it's kind of like a rehabilitation center where you work on releasing all the bad things you did on earth and cleanse your spirit. If heaven really exists, I do believe it is full of positive energy and will feel like paradise, but the healing work will still continue since you are gaining more and more knowledge about the divine. Now that you’re your higher self, you know what you truly value. If you value evil and greed, you will descend deeper and deeper into hell. If you value love and generosity, you will ascend higher into heaven.
What Is Heaven Like?
Swedenborg theorized that there are levels to heaven and the higher up you go, the closer you get to God. You can achieve the highest level of heaven once you completely open yourself up to the divine and align yourself with God, ready to receive his love and wisdom. This relates back to the Law of Vibration which states that in order to attract the things you want, you have to align your vibration with it first. If you truly want to experience God’s wisdom you have to put out that vibration so that you can ascend higher. Swedenborg makes an interesting note that some people will not be ready for God’s wisdom and will feel so sick and overwhelmed that it forces them to descend back into the lower levels of heaven until they are truly ready.
What Is Hell Like?
Swedenborg simply states that hell is the part of creation that is farthest away from the Lord. He also states that God does not determine who goes to hell, it’s actually the spirits themselves that determine where they deserve to go. This makes a lot of sense because we know that even in the earthly realm, you only attract what you believe you are deserving of. From the day we were born we were blessed with the power of free will that allows us to create our own reality and make our own choices. Why wouldn’t it be the same in the afterlife? If you truly think you are a selfish, cruel person then you will go to hell because you believe you deserve it. Swedenborg claims that hell is not a form of punishment, but rather where you go because it makes you feel comfortable. He also says that there is no Devil, but rather the spirits in hell are the Devils. Like heaven, hell also has levels. The lowest level is dark, cold, lonely, and the farthest away from God. The spirits in hell find heaven to be revolting and the spirits in heaven find hell to be revolting.
Reading this you’re probably asking “Can you leave hell once you’ve entered?” Yes, I personally believe you can. Like I mentioned before along with Swedenborg’s beliefs, you go where you believe you are deserving to go. Healing is a process that we go through throughout our entire lives and can carry on even into the afterlife. If you’re in hell you can one hundred percent heal and become a better spirit, therefore ascending higher up. Of course, no one knows how long this will take, but I believe it is very much possible. It’s never too late to better yourself, even after death.
I know this is probably a lot to take in and left you with a ton of questions that we won’t have the answer to as long as we’re living in the earthly realm. When it comes to the afterlife yes, spirituality will for sure give you some insight, but some things just aren’t meant to be known while we’re alive. If we knew everything life would be boring and pointless. It’s always good to keep an open mind no matter how crazy the theories might sound!
