Summary

The article addresses the misinterpretation by some leftists and Twitter users of President Trump's reference to "coyotes" in the context of immigration, clarifying that the term refers to human smugglers, not the animal, and highlighting the involvement of cartels in border control and the risks associated with smuggling migrants into the US.

Abstract

The author of the article criticizes the knee-jerk reactions of some fellow leftists who rushed to ridicule President Trump's comments about "coyotes" bringing children to the U.S. border. The article explains that "coyotes" are actually human smugglers who facilitate illegal border crossings, a term that was misunderstood by many, including a Georgia representative. The piece underscores the importance of fact-checking before jumping to conclusions and tweeting misinformation. It also sheds light on the dangerous and often exploitative nature of human smuggling, where migrants are at the mercy of these "coyotes" and the cartels that control the borders, sometimes leading to situations akin to human trafficking and ransom demands.

Opinions

  • The author believes that leftists have made themselves look foolish by not verifying the context of President Trump's "coyotes" comment before reacting.
  • There is a critique of the eagerness to discredit the POTUS without proper research, which the author suggests is a trend among leftists.
  • The author points out that even educated individuals, such as Ph.D. holders, failed to research the term "coyotes" before commenting on social media.
  • The article implies that there is a spectrum of integrity among coyotes, with some operating like businessmen while others are con artists exploiting migrants.
  • The author highlights the seriousness of cartel involvement in human smuggling, portraying them as gatekeepers who enforce their control over borders with lethal consequences for those who do not comply.

POTUS was NOT talking about Wile E.

My fellow leftists have once again made themselves look foolish, which has been a growing trend over the last few years. In their misplaced hyper-vigilance and eagerness to make the POTUS look like an idiot — as if he doesn’t do a good enough job of that himself on Twitter — hundreds of Twitter users began tapping away when President Trump said, “Children are brought here by coyotes and lots of bad people…and lots of bad people, cartels, and they’re brought here and they used to use them to get into our country.” Ay, Dios Mio! No one could be bothered to check the term on Google, Ecosia, Duck Duck Go or dare I say it, Bing.

Twitter loses its mind, again

I’m going to let the tweets speak for themselves. However, it’s necessary to point out that Representative Dar’shun Kendrick from Georgia thought he was referring to the animal. When she was confronted with the truth she offered a weak excuse for not researching before tweeting. Also, if you look closely when you search “coyotes” on Twitter you’ll see some Ph.Ds getting it wrong and I know all of us are fallible, but shouldn’t they be good at research?

Who are the coyotes?

Coyotes is a slang term for people who smuggle migrants to the US. It can turn into a human trafficking situation like the president seemed to suggest, but that is not always the case. Many consider themselves to be businessmen who are simply in it for the money and enjoy the risks along the way. While others are con artists who try to make the migrants pay upfront and then don’t follow through with the trip or leave the migrants stranded halfway.

The coyotes with a sliver of integrity have them pay as they go and the fee is based on the route. There are routes mapped out and the migrants pay thousands of dollars for the guidance on these dangerous trips. Sometimes they get to the last stretch and the coyote will demand more money. This money often comes from family members already in the US, so left with no other options they will call them and the coyote will demand what amounts to a ransom.

What do the cartels have to do with it?

They’re the gatekeepers. As one coyote told Univision, “They are our ticket into the United States because they are the ones who control the borders.” The cartels charge per person, higher fees for adults than for minors. There is no cheating them either because they show up to do a headcount to ensure the coyote paid in full. If the coyotes can’t pay, it’s a death sentence for all who are involved.
