Diversity: The Unique Spirit Of Existence!

A world where everyone has the same view on life, thinks the same way, is the same color, likes the same food, speaks the same language, enjoys the same music, worships the same god, and has the same values would be like a rainbow that had lost its color. It should not be forgotten that the rainbow takes its elegance and magnificence not from being high in the sky but from the harmony created by different colors coming together. -Mert Unal
Diversity and differences are the souls of societies and the essence of existence. It is such a unique spirit that it teaches us to sense the harmony of colors rather than seeing the world in black and white. Diversity is like a voice whispering in our ears that there is another world beyond the walls that surround us. It’s like a teacher who broadens our understanding and guides us through self-discovery. Have you ever felt as if you didn’t belong where you are, in your life, your occupation, or in the language you speak? Have you ever fantasized about the lives you felt you belonged to while gazing at the sky and counting planes? If your answer is yes, you owe that to diversity’s wisdom, the genuine teacher who made you believe that another life is possible.
We would never have realized that another existence, another voice, another perspective was possible if life comprised of the same colors, sounds, languages, and thoughts. If everyone were the same, it would be a robotic society whose destinies are shackled by the walls surrounding them. We are all unique parts of the same mosaic with different silhouettes. The harmonious coexistence of different emotions, tastes, colors, races, perspectives, ideas, beliefs, and values is the cornerstone of this mosaic of life.
Now think about this mosaic of life that gave us the meaning of life. Think about people around you who are puzzlingly different yet remarkably similar at the same time. Whether you see it or not, everyone has a place in this mosaic. Do not get lost in the mosaic, and do not allow individual pieces to blur your sight. Think of this mosaic. Think of your place in it. And never forget that just as one piece is indispensable for the whole mosaic, then every piece is indispensable for each other. To peer into the mosaic is to see through all the details, thoughts, experiences, different cultures, languages, and personality types that come together in one work of art.
Our journey from the primitive stage to the present level is a triumph of the mosaic of life, which is composed of people from every aspect of life. Then what is stopping us from reaching across the barriers separating us and becoming closer than ever? Why can’t we allow everyone to follow their dreams, express themselves freely, and pursue happiness in their own unique ways? Why are we reluctant to accept people as they are? Is there any possible way to overcome our personal differences, give each other space, and respect one another without being judgmental? How can we create a bridge that connects two people even if they don’t speak the same language? Are we going to finally understand that we need to embrace diversity for the sake of humanity’s future one day?
One day we will understand everything. We will understand the importance of everyone, every voice, every breath, every creature, every moment because we have to. “The human race is like a single body, even though it is made up of numerous people; if one part suffers, the other part suffers inevitably.” However, our bodies are not perfect, diseases can develop over time that might compromise the body’s integrity, like cancerous cells. These cells that are betraying the organs are waiting for their chance to spread across the body that has been fulfilling its work peacefully for years. Today’s extremists and radicals are the cancer cells of the single-body human race, causing persecution, death, and tears by discriminating against color, language, religion, and race. These cells should never be underestimated, tolerated, or overlooked; they should be removed from the body before it’s too late.
We all share this planet together; we all breathe the same air, we all drink the same water, and we all depend on each other for our survival. We are all members of the same family and need to work together to solve the problems affecting our planet. We are suffering from the same disease, and shedding tears for the same war, anxious about the same poverty, pollution, and hunger. We are praying through the same sky. So, you tell me, what is dividing us?
Yet, it is still questionable whether or not we comprehend the importance of differences of all kinds or appreciate them. Our world views are highly influenced by narrow regionalism norms which constitute blindness to absolute reality .“The most critical corner in the development of the world passes through the productivity of diversity.”Only the power of different thoughts coming together has productive vitality, which enhances society’s welfare to a greater extent. Diversity is a powerful instrument for solving the challenges that humanity faces as well as for producing discoveries, technologies, products, innovations, and wealth.
There’s no doubt that our world needs unity and harmony more than ever before. Unfortunately, too many people still harbor prejudices and close-minded views about different cultures, religions, and races. Some of them hold onto ancient myths and superstitions, while others base their entire lives around material possessions and money. Either way, we need to put an end to discrimination in all its forms. We must unite under a shared vision of equality, mutual respect, and compassion. Otherwise, we risk losing sight of what truly matters and falling victim to ignorance and hatred.
It is important to remember that no one owes you anything. Each individual has the right to live according to their own convictions without having to justify themselves to anyone else. Everyone deserves equal rights and the freedom to fail without fearing persecution. It should not matter whether someone follows the rules set out by their parents, teachers, societal norms, or religious institutions. Once you understand that none of these entities has the power to define you as a person, you will break free of social constraints and find inner peace. Only then will you be able to discover your authentic self and proudly be alongside others who are equally passionate about living life to the fullest.
We should be set free from oppressive societal norms to become the architect of our own destinies. “Equal freedom” can only be achieved if differences of any kind are treated fairly. “Equal Freedom” as I felt obliged to emphasize that way because this unfortunate question had raised in my head and went through to sky as I was writing the paragraph; we all may be free but are we all equally free?
It’s easy to become prejudiced towards others if you haven’t had the chance to experience diversity first-hand. However, the moment you step foot into the land of the unknown and break free of your chains from prejudice, you will begin seeing things differently. Your perspective will change completely, and suddenly all the differences disappear leaving behind only similarities. At that point, you will start realizing how little we truly know about each other and that perhaps the greatest mystery of humanity lies hidden beneath the surface.
No matter how diverse or different we may be, we are all human beings with some basic needs and desires. I don’t mean physical necessities like food, water, and shelter. But also desire to live, love, laugh, cry, and many other things we take for granted. Sure, some groups are more prone to certain problems compared to others. But overall, people are the same everywhere; as long as they have food on their tables and a roof above their heads, they are usually content. If you take your eyes off the differences among cultures and races, you will only see humans living on the same planet trying to survive.
We must realize that it is only through the practice of tolerance and open-mindedness towards differences that we will ever be able to achieve true happiness. When people acknowledge the beauty of differences and use them in such a way as to allow them to coexist peacefully without any prejudice, then they will come to understand that these so-called differences are just another attribute of who they are inside. The philosophy of tolerance does not allow for discrimination, prejudice, or racism. Tolerance means allowing and recognizing other points of view without necessarily agreeing with them. Accepting others does not necessarily imply approval; it means recognizing their existence while avoiding judgment on their actions.
The universal rule that governs all interactions between people is to treat others as you would wish them to treat you.” That is the only way for us to live together peacefully in society as vast and crucial as ours.
We will carefully listen to wise counsel and wisdom that echo through books, the truth, and love that pervades the atmosphere, and the serene thoughts found in our hearts. The softness of raindrops falling on green leaves will teach us compassion and empathy as we enjoy the beautiful music and scent. The communication brought by animals and the wind will guide us to find our path. Understanding that crying, laughing, loving, and dying have no color, language, or race will lead us to the truth. — Mert Unal
