Stop. What are you thinking? Were you ruminating over love lacking, bills piling, boss railing, inner failing, or where you put the Cheez Whiz?
That’s a whole lot of woe. Woe that you truck around every day,
Let’s change this. We are naturally joyful beings, though you wouldn’t know it to look at us. Our high energy potential crashed under no’s, should’s, must’s, don’ts a very long time ago. But it’s still there.
No, I’m not suggesting a trip on de-nial river. You can’t paddle fast enough to avoid the downers for long. Always start where you are. Then, move to be elsewhere.
How to get your joy back? A mere thought tweak. Add a word.
AND
Money is short AND I can buy my favorite coffee. My boss is a pain AND the weekend is tomorrow. My love life is low AND I have great friends My article sucks AND I’m a great cook.
You’re on your own with the cheez-whiz.
Counterbalance the negative with a real and tangible positive. Something you believe. Genius! We’re rewiring our brains. Making room for joy!
How can you be joyful in a world filled with woe? Simple. You make your own world.
You’re doing this already, except you’re working in the wrong direction. Doing a great job, no doubt. But this is solid proof you’re good at this; you just need to change tracks.
Your Thoughts = Your Story = Your World. Stories generate emotions and shape your world, so changing is simple. Bring in the woe stories only when you need to make a decision or act.
I get it, this feels tricky-scary. We’re afraid if we don’t focus on our woes the woe-boogeyman will take us by surprise. You know the guy. The one you looked under the toilet stall door at school to make sure he wasn’t there. (Why were those doors always closed?)
He never was there, right? It’s the same here. What we fear rarely exists. And if it should pop up, it’s rarely the way we thought it would be. All that planning, worrying, ruminating, cogitating for nothing.
