Distracted Mommy

9 of 💯 — Summertime and a Double Life

The smell of summer permeated the backyard with freshly watered grass from where the kids played all afternoon. She watered them, then the trees.

Sounds of laughter high in their voices “Mommy, water us again! And again!” But Sally could mindlessly water and act like she played with her kids. Almost hearing their voices as an echo in the background while her gears turned — thinking about the next kill.

The evening arrived, and she rushed the kid’s bedtime. “C’mon y’all! Teeth brushed, let’s go. I’ll read, and it’s bedtime,” insistently she urged.

The kids slept, and she exhaled a sigh of relief.

Sally crept downstairs and through the landmine that is the playroom and sat at her desk. Opening up a file entitled “New Contract,” she read the name and price.

A cool half a million for two hours of work is a great evening.

She synced the contract to her phone and changed into more appropriate attire, but before leaving, she kissed her kids on their foreheads.

“I love you, my sweets; Mommy will see you in the morning!”

She left in silence.

Thanks to Zane Dickens and the 💯Story Challenge. Check out this great piece on writer’s block by Jann Christoph von der Pütten. I needed to read this, and you should too.

Thank you for supporting my journey. I write when I’m not chasing my kids around for the summer!
